I go back and listen to the Howard Stern Show every year for 9/11 as a tradition.

I was in the 4th grade. Still remember it was only me my brother and 1 other kid on the bus ride home because everyone else on our route got picked up that day

I just ran across this on the 25 Years Ago 2001 Xwitter feed. Everything stopped that morning.
That is a good feed, step-by-step. I had forgotten a lot of the rumored stuff that was reported. Like: Its was a helicopter that hit the Pentagon, it was a plane loaded with biological and chemical components that hit the Pentagon. There was an explosion at the Capitol building. An explosion or attack on the White House. A hijacked plane crashed over the ocean. Car bombs......
It was chaos.
ETA: I will say that if you check out that feed it pulls no punches in regards to the trauma. There is a lot of jumper stuff and a lot of graphic detail.

I remember it all too well. It felt like there was no end to the mayhem. After it became clear we were under attack, Fort Knox, where I was stationed, completely locked down. Our civilian workers were there until late in the evening.

That's why I try to go back every year and watch live coverage. It is easy to let hindsight take completely over and lose understanding about the chaos and confusion that reigned in the moment.
This is why I have always appreciated this thread every year. The packaged, over-produced stuff is nice for learning and teaching, but it doesn't foster an appreciation for what that day — and the days and weeks following it — was like.

It still pisses me off as well, and I agree f—- all the people who pretend it didn’t happen.
The tragedy did bring people together. We put our differences aside and were all Americans. I believe the best way we can honor those who were murdered on that day is to come together, as least for one day, as Americans again.

I was talking to a friend of mine whose family member was one of the American Airline pilots for the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. She said his widow has never remarried and has never been the same. There were so many lives destroyed that day.

I was in school and it was kept from us all day. I know classes at other schools got to watch the coverage live. I guess our school didn't want to cause a panic.
When I first heard about it, it didn't even register until we watched the news that night and saw the footage.

There's a lot of survivor stories on YouTube that are painful, but necessary to watch. Should be mandatory viewing in schools. 9/11 has unfortunately almost become like this pass-over day that no one wants to address anymore.

I was in 9th grade Pre-AP US History of all classes. I could tell by looking at my teachers face that this was devastating for our country.
He was a phenomenal teacher, and I hope kids these days have someone that truly cares about American History like he did.

I was watching CNBC getting ready for work, everyone was still trying to parse if it could have been accident, when Maria Bartiromo (she was the money honey reporter on the floor of the stock exchange at the time) called in to say she could confirm she had seen a plane had hit the second tower.
It was one of those moments of nothing is ever going to be the same.
God bless the brave passengers who brought the 4th plane down in Shanksville, they gave us a great victory that day and a moral victory forever.
