Do you attribute that to the President, or to the media's only catering to the 15% of the population who depend on social media for their sense of self-worth? Because I blame the latter.

Lester, the travel ban was proactive and in January. The ship to NYC was proactive and it was ready when needed. The phased reopening was out weeks before anyone implemented it.

Being lied to doesn't help the government's cause of getting people to comply to new things like don't go to work, don't go to church, don't get a haircut, don't go to the gym, keep your kids at home, don't eat at restaurants, and wear this on your face everywhere you do go.
Agreed.

Case in point- McDonalds. You can go through the drive-through and get a Happy Meal.
You can't tell me that a McD's is 100% sterilized, that the employees are screened and checked 100% every day, and that there's some magical barrier at that window. There's a couple hundred people driving through every day. SOMEBODY is going to be positive asymptomatic, and it spreads easily (like a cold).

Or the UPS guy going to hundreds of houses a day, every day. Sometimes getting signatures.

What specific actions do you propose that the government should have taken in February that would have prevented what you consider to be happening now?

The key is to be specific in what policies you would have enacted, without naming any policies that were considered to be ineffective or not worth trying by the media and "experts" at the time.

In other words, what exactly should President Trump have done?

A travel ban to & from where it originated was a very basic & obvious decision.

The domestic response was a complete failure which is why we are in the position we are in with no end in sight

Authoritarianism is better for dealing with something like a pandemic.

So yeah, a country founded on freedom and telling an authoritarian king to frick off wont do well.

imagine the outcry i this country if government workers were welding apartment buildings shut to trap infected people inside.

Yes, I do. Show us how much Team Red downplayed it as a counterbalance to Team Blue, and once you figure out how completely pants on head retarded the whole idea of this team shite flinging you insist on is, let me know.

keep trying to blame Trump for everything.

Don't confuse pointing out the abysmal handling of the problem with blaming him for everything. Some of it is out of his control. The things that have been in his control have been awful, and we can start with messaging. He's downplayed the threat from the start, and has been completely wrong the entire time. HIs task force came out with a solid phase-in with recommended benchmarks to meet to get things back to normal, and within a few days had completely abandoned it calling out Dem-controlled states and cities for keeping the economy stymied with their closures, while cheering on Republican controlled states for opening things back up. Which we can now see was premature, and many at the time sounded the alarm over it.

The virus coming here and spreading was inevitable, so I don't think anyone is blaming him for everything as you suggest. I don't think it's a high bar to expect the President of the United States to show leadership, both in word and action. He and his administration have done a few good things to try and quell the spread, mostly in the early stages. He's been pretty absent the past two months as it has spread in the Sun Belt states, while also continuing his rhetoric of it just going away.

That was ridiculed by politically motivated democrats and initiated before any other western country.

Failure being that they shouldn't have shutdown anything except lock up nursing homes and let the rest of us weigh the risks and decide for ourselves. True dat.

What specific actions do you suggest that the federal government should have taken to hinder the spread of the virus?

Everything in your post is purely political, and has no bearing whatsoever on the actual spread of the virus--simply the media coverage of it.

Even more specifically, what exactly could Trump have done to eliminate the current surge in cases caused by *wait for it* individuals lawfully going about their lives? Ask them to stop on Twitter?

I can point to some inaction on Trump's part...he wasn't the one forcing nursing homes to take corona patients. I can't really remember who made that call or how it turned out for their area and the overall numbers in the US

A centralized testing and tracing program, activating FEMA to coordinate supply chains to get testing kits, PPE, and other needed supplies to harder hit areas, clear, concise messaging that doesn't contradict the prevailing words of the experts, not downplaying the threat, etc.

Things literally every other president, R and D, in my lifetime would have done.

The USA was totally unprepared for this Biological Attack from China and the American people have absolutely no will or desire to respond to China's attack.

In fact, our response is to pretend that it didn't happen, just like a battered wife pretends that it didn't happen.

If we were able to track the pandemic before anyone even knew about it, we'd probably be doing okay.

You could read Maryland GOP Governor describe Trump's own ineptitude in handling this from the beginning.

A centralized testing and tracing program

You anticipate a high rate of participation? Because the CDC has this and no one participates or gives honest feedback. There is zero reason that the central government must set this up when there is no participation and the states are constitutionally positioned to do it more effectively. It is redundant and a total waste of time and resources for a virus that does not substantially impact most of the people who contract it. Further, the lag between infection and contagiousness/manifestation of symptoms makes doing this sort of thing blatant guesswork, at best. Without lab testing, there is no way to non-circumstantially link any one person's infection to any given other person or location. The contact tracing is nothing but feel-good bullshite with a latency period of over a week.

activating FEMA to coordinate supply chains to get testing kits,

Lets be more specific here. How much more coordination would needed to be done in order to develop, produce, and distribute half a billion novel virus tests in 5 months?

quote:

clear, concise messaging that doesn't contradict the prevailing words of the experts

That would require that the "experts" establish a consistent message outside of asking healthy people to shut down their lives for a virus that is not life threatening to 95% of the population.

Things literally every other president, R and D, in my lifetime would have done.

Two of the three things you listed are related to advance planning and not contemporaneous reaction. (A testing program and the PPE/supply stockpiles). If all of your prior Presidents would have taken these actions to prepare for a pandemic, why didn't they?

Democrat governors kill the most people in the United States

Democrats: Trump did this

Trump tries to close the borders for years but Democrats want completely open borders.

Democrats: Trump let in the virus
