Downplayed it, was unprepared, lacks direction & planning.

Got bad news for you, the populace is tilting towards giving power to an authoritarian for the promise of safety and security and the media is dead set on making them believe its for the best.

You are 100% correct.
Even Sci-Fi authors, who are usually great prognosticators, failed to predict this type of societal reaction. It's quite the phenomenon.

I really wish this was false.

quote:Yep. This says it exactly right.
Authoritarianism is better for dealing with something like a pandemic.
So yeah, a country founded on freedom and telling an authoritarian king to frick off wont do well.
Biggest hope for a free country is that you hope the populace is educated and aware enough to do things voluntarily, to prevent things from going bad.
But watching things right now, that doesn't work. You have people that won't accept it, until/unless they look outside and it's a scene from a zombie movie. Hey, the sun is out, it's a pretty day, my neighbor is cutting his lawn. Everything's great, I want to go to the mall (or whatever).
Even those who do take it seriously, can't hold out long. 2 weeks in, and you're like "man, I want to get away. I'm going to the beach". You look at it in a vacuum, and think- no, I wouldn't do that right now. But then you realize, hey, I'm doing it.
I mean, isolate "except for": drive-thru food? UPS deliveries? Constant trips to Home Depot and grocery stores?
Like those are somehow immune from spreading things?

quote:This kind of thinking goes both ways though. For example, it’s a lot easier for someone who isn’t a small business owner to say “oh just keep everything closed until a vaccine” than someone relying on that business as their sole income. It’s also easier for a Professor at a University for example, to favor harsher restrictions than say a bartender. Difference being one is getting paid and one is not.
You see a ton of folks saying “it doesn’t bother ME, so I declare the world fine and safe”

You think America was prepared for this? & do you think he’s handled this well as the leader of this country?

Every "disaster" breeds those looking for financial gain, especially in politics where states will beg for more and more money. Usually, it's just a region that has to beg at one time like when a hurricane, wildfire, flood, etc hits. What you have here is the entire country and 50 states looking for handouts and money and competing with each other. Not to mention the hospital systems competing as well. The worse they can make the numbers, the bigger piece of the disaster pie they get.
want to find out how big this really is? Quit paying money to and for Covid in every form and fashion. Then let me know how many cases we have and how many people are willing to stay home to mitigate it.

And I think you would find a very different response from the public if this virus were actually as deadly as they tried to make it out to be in the beginning.
And if the "experts" stopped flip-flopping.
And if the politicians creating these mandates didn't ignore them themselves.
And if politicians and the media didn't support and encourage the large gatherings of people and BLM protests.
Your average person can smell bullshite, and the response to Covid from our media and politicians quite frankly stinks of a rather large pile of bullshite.

5 months later and that seems to be the only action Trump has taken that people can point to. Sad!
Now we have a long list of countries Americans can't travel to.

Being lied to doesn't help the government's cause of getting people to comply to new things like don't go to work, don't go to church, don't get a haircut, don't go to the gym, keep your kids at home, don't eat at restaurants, and wear this on your face everywhere you do go.

LOL what an idiot. Yea the guy who was called racist because he banned travel from China. The guy who listened to Fauci about the seriousness of the virus. It was Fauci saying this wouldn't be an issue, and he was advising Trump, who isn't a doctor.
Literally just looking to blame Trump for something that the CDC even downgraded because it wasn't deadly enough to call a pandemic.
Congrats on the stupid, stupid.

It will go away. Just stay calm. It’s going to disappear one day, like a miracle

This isn't about politics, it's about society and culture.
I remember when we were tracking this in November in China; and the Chinese were literally barricading roads and locking people inside.
We discussed it then, our country could not deal with a big epidemic as efficiently as they could. Our population, any free populace, would not tolerate the steps required to isolate something.
We also don't have the patience to wait it out. People bitch whenever Amazon doesn't show up in two days, people got tired of sitting at home after about a week with this.
You have groups of people swearing this is all fake, and their evidence is that there's not piles of bodies on the side of the road. You have folks insulting each other for trying to take precautions. You see a ton of folks saying "it doesn't bother ME, so I declare the world is fine and safe, and I'm going to go do whatever I want".
Like I said, this isn't even a political observation, it's just looking at society.
All astute observations. Have an upvote.

quote:What I don't think Americans were ready for was how easily the media can manipulate them into being scared of something 99.7% of the country shouldn't be scared of.
You think America was prepared for this?
quote:He could have handled it like Obama handled Swine and let 2000 kids die... is what I would say if I thought the president has that much power over a virus spreading.
do you think he’s handled this well as the leader of this country?
Who has gotten sick that didn't receive the care they needed? Who got sick and died but would have lived had they caught it 2 or 3 months later? The death totals, as wrong as they are, will be what they will be. If the care is available and they're not dying from lack of care, then the when doesn't matter because this is going to spread and spread. Even places that had claimed full victory eventually seen more pockets pop up.
The issue is that people have to learn to accept risk and take responsibility. We don't shut down all the theme parks in the world because someone with a heart condition may die on a roller coaster. And we don't ground all air travel because it's dangerous for pregnant women. But that's how we handled this virus.
