Thought the same thing.
Reminded me of that scene in, “Creepshow” when the guy led his wife to the monster.

So any river in the deep south?
You enjoy the Great Indoors?

Should have married this guy.
There's a HUGE difference in that guy wrestling a 3-4 ft. baby gator as opposed to one that can snatch a person and kill them after tipping over a canoe with 2 people in it.
That old guy wouldn't have success if that gator was about 7 ft. plus.

Same. Almost zero chance you’ll come across a predator like a shark in Cocodrie or pointe aux chene. Pretty good chance you come across a big arse hungry gator in places like bayou black or atchafalaya basin. I don’t take my kayak in those waters, only outboard. Maybe if I had one of those sturdy paddle kayaks, and was packing heat.

So that pretty much rules out any river, lake, brackish water, pond, or swamp from North Carolina south

Sure. I’m not going to lose sleep about not canoeing in those places knowing that if I did I could be attacked by a fricking alligator.

There's river tubing about 40 minutes away from us in the Edisto River, and I've been wanting to do it. There's never been an alligator attack but damn if that wouldn't be in my head the whole time. It's the first question/comment every time one of their ads on social media comes up.

Good luck with that. I’d stick with freshwater.

canoe Cynthia Diekema and husband were paddling in mouth of river when startled animal thrashed and capsized canoe An alligator killed a Florida woman after tipping over a canoe she and her husband were paddling, in what investigators say appeared to be an accidental encounter. The attack happened on Tuesday afternoon near the mouth of Tiger Creek into Lake Kissimmee, south of Orlando, the Florida fish and wildlife conservation commission (FWC) said. It is near the location of a March alligator attack in which a woman was bitten on the elbow while kayaking. Investigators said at a news conference on Wednesday that the couple was canoeing in about 2.5ft (less than 1 meter) of water
First of all, terrible journalism. It wasn’t at the mouth of a river, it was a dang creek.
Furthermore, Tiger creek is FULL of gators and dumps into another small lake not kissimmee. It’s like taking a Kayak to the north edge of Chicot and being shocked you’re in the middle of a Gator reunion.

quote:Sharks are much worse to encounter while kayaking than gators imo. Gators are usually pretty docile where as I've been harassed by sharks, especially bull sharks. It sounds like this story was a freak accident.

Here's my take. Any time I'm in Dularge, Pecan Island, the quantity of gators I see is much higher than fresh water lakes in Central and North Louisiana. However, from my experience they are all 4 ft to 6 ft. Whenever I hear of a gator on a news article killed in a North Louisiana lake or Red River, they are always monster 12 ft to 16 ft.

People don't make enough Florida woman stories.
The women here really aren't any more normal than the men are.
