Just added my 16yo daughter to USAA auto. Went up $600/mo. WTF?? Anyone have suggestions on another carrier?

As some one who does this for a living $600 in Louisiana (I’m assuming) is higher than normal but not egregious.. because I’ve seen worse.. I typically with Progressive and Geico see in the neighborhood for 200-400 also depends on what kind of cars are in the household.

If I have to direct you to one I’d say Progressive

Wow, it only cost you $50 per month to insure a teenager just by changing companies?

It's been a while (~7 years since I last shipped for a new teen driver), but no company had that small of an increase for the family, even with increased deductibles much less cutting it in half. USAA has been the cheapest every time I have shopped. I must be doing something right for their algorithm.

Congrats on the deal.

When the girl told me the price I asked for a supervisor because going from around $320 a month to around $1300 a month just adding my son and another truck seemed wrong. The supervisor said off the record that USAA doesn’t really wanna insure young drivers so they price them out.

She’s actually the one that told me to shop both Geico and progressive, that they were massively buying up market right now. Progressive was about $120 more a month than GEICO which still would’ve been a lot cheaper than USAA.

Get her a beater, put liability on it, and make her the primary driver. She will then become an occasional driver of your other vehicles. Her policy should be $600 every six months or less.

Ha, no. Liability is the biggest part of car insurance for a teen.

I have heard that USAA prices very differently based on how you are a member. I am a retired O6 and joined as soon as I transitioned from enlisted to officer (wasn't available to me when I enlisted in 1992).

I see all kinds of complaints about price here, but like I said they are always the cheapest option when I shop around. Plus they have always paid claims immediately without question.

Would love to know what they are doing behind the scenes.

Not anymore. If you have a household driver that isn't listed, regularly drives a vehicle and gets into an accident, the claim will be denied.

There are many reasons you may be right or you may be wrong.

If an adult child is not living at home but driving your vehicle yes they can be denied. I read my policy and the definition of household hasn't changed. The only thing that can override that is a legislative act or the Commissioner allows changes the definition of a household or allows the policy to only state husband, wife, and named children/household members.

Someone earlier stated State Farm is cracking down. That may mean when the child gave an address it was different from the policy address or the child stated a different address on the police report.. Or they have policy language that anyone living in the home driving your vehicle must be named.

Risk based pricing. They were reasonable as far as rates, until a large number of enlisted started getting auto (2012ish?). They're younger as a cohort, which increases risk by itself, let alone the fact we all know the kind of dumb shite junior enlisted do.

Obviously a part of it, but my son is an a junior enlisted in the Army and when he looked around USAA was the cheapest as well. I was shocked they beat Geico, the General... for him.

I think he makes better decisions than some of his peers, but he also makes some pretty questionable ones.

I am 100% right when it comes to State Farm. If you have a youthful driver that is licensed, is a regular driver in the household, and isn't listed/rated on the policy as a driver, your claim will be denied and you may even be non renewed.

quote:

It is your responsibility to inform us of all regular drivers of your vehicles and changes to those drivers throughout the life of your policy. Failure to disclose drivers may result in denial of coverage. Regular drivers, regardless of their relationship to the primary named insured or their residence address, include:
• All drivers who drive the vehicle(s) on the policy once or more in a typical month • All drivers who regularly drive the vehicle(s) at least three months of the year
• For business related vehicles, also include the business owner(s) and employee(s) that drive the vehicle(s) in any capacity

20 yrs ago some carriers would give the option of paying all the back premium. Most follow Progressives lead and n denying coverage now.
Emails to underwriting are a great tool to get the leaches non renewed with extreme prejudice.

Mine just went up $150 with Progessive. Did you happen to add her closer in the middle of your premium? I added mine right as it renewed and I'm paying $360 total for 3 vehicles.

Most carriers have paid massive claims from undisclosed drivers. Any agent telling their customer not to add a youthful driver is opening themselves up for a huge E&O claim

Goddamn. Did you add her as a driver to your existing plan with your existing vehicles, or did you have to get her something and take that cost on too? I just did the same for mine via State Farm. She's driving one of my older vehicles. It was like an extra $300. And it's fully covered.

3 daughters under the age of 26, wife and I. 4 vehicles, none purchased new. 2 >8 years old.. Car insurance more than homeowners. USAA is the carrier. Just they way it is these days.

We switched to GEICO when we added teen drivers. Way cheaper than other options for us.

We ended up going with goose head. He was essentially a broker, but they found us a really good deal. I think Mercury insurance is who the ultimate underwriter was.

But yes, my son drives a used Honda Civic, not the sport or anything fancy just the basic version and ours went up $380 per month.
