I still value someone that dresses up at least a little, it says they are at least trying to make a good impression. Doesn't have to be a suit and tie and all that jazz but at least have on nice clothes, have your hair brushed, etc.
Anyone who shows up looking like a slob is highly suspicious. I question the judgement of anyone who shows up to an interview looking disheveled.

Asking about vacation and holidays during the initial interview.
I just really need to know if I need to cancel my trip to the Finger Lakes.

WTF dude, I went to University of Phoenix on a baseball scholarship.

So, you’re one of those “my career is my identity” clowns. Working for a corporation is nothing more than a transaction to collect a paycheck.

You missed out on some quality employees that stole someone else’s car just to get there on time. That kind of dedication is hard to find .

Never hired/fired.
My FIL (PSU guy) and his childhood buddy (MIT grad) would take people to lunch. If they salted their food before tasting it, that was a red flag.
All I got.
That's an old Henry Ford tactic and how he would test engineers that he'd interview. The thinking was that if they would salt food without testing it, they'd put a product into production without testing it.
My father did most of the hiring and firing for the companies that he worked for. He followed the Bear Bryant method of if they aren't smarter than you, then you don't need them. That said, he mostly hired executive roles.
Funny that your FIL is a PSU guy, being from PA my father said that PSU grads fell into two categories exclusively. Incredibly intelligent or utterly incompetent. Said his best and worst hires all came from Penn State.

Man y'all baws are brutal.
I have two. 1. Do you introduce yourself to the admin and make it a point to learn her name? Brush her off or ignore her I know you're going to ignore the people that matter.
2. When you piss someone off at work, how do you recover? "I don't do that". "I'm nice". Ok you're a pushover or you have no remorse. Either way you're out. Tell me you tied up with someone and then you had beers after. You have a spine and can admit fault.

I interviewed with a construction company after being out of school for ten years. Went through two interviews. The guy calls and asks for my lsu transcripts. Okay, sure, proof of degree I guess. Dude calls me for a third interview, I go. Dude starts asking me about my grades from over a decade ago. I thanked him for wasting my time and excused myself. I had substantial project experience at that point in my career. The recruiter I was dealing with blew up my phone trying to make excuses for the guy. Slimy douche.
They ended up going out of business shortly after.

Let’s be real. Nobody gives a shite about where you got a degree from in 99% of jobs. It’s an HR box that has to be checked. It’s all about your work experience.

What are some real red flags?
And you haven’t even asked them their strengths and weaknesses yet.

I have a good friend that is an attorney at one of the NOLA white shoe firms and he told me that before they schedule an interview they have their HR person look at their Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. he says they have passed even on attorney applicants because of Facebook content.

I know three people who do great work and are neat in appearance and their work area, but the interiors of their cars look like homeless meth-heads live in there. It would drive me crazy, but some decent employees (especially ones with kids) have trashy car interiors.

I never worked with him professionally but he and his MIT friend had several patents. They got ripped off by the Chinese trying to market one of them there. He was a great FIL. Joined the Army before graduating HS and was shipped off the Germany in WW2. Had a brother who was killed in a bomber over Germany.

You would have loved the guy I met a few years ago at an LSU recruiting event. Dude had blue stripe tattooed on his lips. At first I thought an ink pen that had busted on his lips but then I noticed his neck and hand tats.
I'm guessing he was in the other thread arguing its ok to BYOC to an interview.

I wonder how many fry cooks on here are pretending to be supervisors in this thread.

Did you not put that in the job posting?
Why wouldn't someone ask if you are expecting them to work every holiday?
You, the job you're hiring for, and the compensation package you are offering are being interviewed as well...

I don't have time to read all of the responses, but the number one thing is obviously being on time, as obvious as it may seem...
