In much of the world in the 21st century, yes. During most of history and all of pre-history not so much.

One of the bigger slave owners in Louisiana was a free black woman named Marie Metoyer. She had almost 300 slaves at one point.

Can any of us really chose where we want to live or where we want to work? Is true freedom just an illusion?

According to them they were fed, housed, clothed, etc. My Boss (who I dont care for and sleeps on the job) is going on about how only like 1 or 2% were beaten, how rare it was, and most owners didnt do that. And that in any workplace you are going to have people that are trouble makers.

By this logic they are saying they wouldn't mind living in prison the rest of their lives. Free food, clothing, medical care and only a chance of being butt raped.

Their general premise that slavery was not nearly as widespread and bad as he general public is led to believe is correct. Only 4% of southerners owned slaves at the height of the Atlantic slave trade

Do what? Half the population of Mississippi in 1860 owned slaves.

Slavery is one of the most evil things throughout all of human history. Anyone disagreeing with that is stupid beyond measure.

To be honest, I don’t think slave life was near as bad as Hollywood and people living today say it was, and I think history backs that up, but let’s be clear, the real injustice was in making them dependent in the first place, and the second injustice was in keeping them in that state of dependence and exclusion to this very day.

So many plantation owners, and so much to gain from their dependence.

I agree with that last post as it relates to keeping them dependent to this very day. I wholeheartedly agree that we should give them their independence by cutting off ALL government assistance.

It always amazes me how groups of people embrace certain stereotypes and shun others even when both are obviously true.

And you’re going to become voters, and you’re going to vote like your friends do.

Trying to minimize the extent of people in the pre-war South owned or used slaves is an exercise in futility.

Using history of over a hundred years ago to take advantage of ignorant people today is about as scary as slavery. This in and effort to enslave the workers of the world.
Venezuela today or Slave states Pre-Civil War?

Has any historian compared the conditions Africans were living under before they were sold into slavery?

Pretty sure that's a bogus statistic. I would put it closer to 25%. Lots of people owned 1 or 2 slaves and you didn't have to be rich to do so.

From History channel's website:

quote:

The 1860 census shows that in the states that would soon secede from the Union, an average of more than 32 percent of white families owned slaves. Some states had far more slave owners (46 percent in South Carolina, 49 percent in Mississippi) while some had far less (20 percent in Arkansas).

Don't take History's word for it. Check the census records yourself. I have done genealogy work for my family and have checked a lot of TN records (my family moved to TN from SC in 1820 as did lots of families after the Cumberland Gap opened). Just eyeballing the census, I remember that about 1 in 4 white families listed slaves in the household (usually 2 or 3). It's really easy to check as there is a column on the census for "negros" and a digit representing the number of slaves goes beside each family who owned one. (If they didn't own one, it stays blank). So it's very easy to eyeball it and get a quick estimate (at least for individual counties).

This notion that only wealthy people like the fictional O'Haras owned slaves is nonsense.

And still only 4% of southerners total. Just because most of them lived in MS does not mean anything

Not about trying to minimize. Its about getting reality out there. It wasnt as bad or widespread as we're led to believe.

Someone has posted evidence to show your number of 4% to be BS. Can you provide evidence that supports your claim that only 4% of people in the Confederacy owned slaves?

Here's another link that completely refutes your 4% number with even more evidence.
