Not saying it was good but it wasn't that different than being a poor white in the 1800s. Factories that abused cheap labor where if one lost a limb you just tossed him aside and hired a new immigrant. You couldn't do that with slaves because slaves were expensive. There were coal mining towns in PA and WV where you were paid in company dollars and your money was only good in that small little town where the coal mine owned everything.

This part is somewhat confusing. Are you saying this whole slavery conversation is taking place in email or that you are having a verbal discussion with them but for some reason told us you were sending an email while talking?
They were having a verbal conversation in front of me while I was typing an email to others. Sorry for the confusion.

By this logic they are saying they wouldn't mind living in prison the rest of their lives. Free food, clothing, medical care and only a chance of being butt raped.
Yeah, pretty much.

What a myopic view.
Acknowledging that there were levels of awfulness doesn’t mean people are saying it “wasn’t that bad”.
But I guarantee you that given the choice between being a slave for a Roman, A mongol, a Caribbean or an antebellum Southerner, you’d take the latter every time.
The reality is that for most of history, life was short, painful and violent.
But we should be thankful that our ancestors endured hardships and tragedies to end up here, and giving their descendants a chance to live in the relative splendor of the United States.

You really feel the need to “what about” slavery? How fricked are we as a society that we cannot just accept that slavery was horrible without having to qualify it?
It’s like if I posted in the thread about the Ole Miss girl who was killed and said “well yeah, but it wasn’t that bad, at least she wasn’t raped and drowned.”

Welcome to Trump's America, where the most outlandish, un-American, historically blasphemous ideas are not only embraced but defended by stretching logic to its extremes, all in the name of political "purity".
QAnon, kids in cages, an American president basically calling a major American city a cesspool, startling increase in anti-semitism and racism, rise and mainstreaming of white nationalism....you name it, the cult will defend it.
Today, the AP (not exactly a bastion of conservatism) talked about how much this line is untrue or disingenuous. Obama and Biden, for example, deported millions of illegal aliens and used the same "cages" you are bitching about now.
It was a front page article on the Shreveport Times.

Because people are having a discussion about it? Should our whole understanding of it just be “slavery bad”? I mean I haven’t seen anyone say that slavery was good, but understanding American chattel slavery in the context of the rest of the world and history seems relevant.

The problem with this society you're talking of is that slavery explained in the late 20th century to now is through the keyhole of hollywood. Even the high school teachers play it up with Uncle Tom's Cabin and Roots which wasn't the norm. Then on top of that our society points the finger at ALL white people when in reality the finger should be pointed at the RICH. Now they want to take everyone's tax dollars to throw money at people who were never slaves and their ancestors had an equal difficult time as all poor people did then.
All poor people had shitty lives in the 1800s. If you don't see how being paid a very small wage or company dollars is just as shitty idk what to tell you. It's a form of slavery is just doesn't have the sexy "race" label on it.

yep, revisionist historians(SJWs usually,) want to paint a black and white(pun intended,) pic of slavery, i.e., prior to EP every white person was a cruel slave owner, and post Civil War, they're all just cruel, racist ex-slave owners whose only regret is that they have no more slaves

The discussion stems from people like you trying to minimize the evil of slavery in America through unsolicited comparisons. The OP mentioned a discussion about slavery not being that bad relative to not being a slave because of meals and shelter.
Now you come in and say yeah well it’s not as bad as other historic slavery. Why bring it up? What is your point in trying to minimize it? Do you go into every thread about killing or rapes and note that more evil things have happened?
Why is understanding American chattel slavery in context important to you?

Because everything needs to be understood in context. How is this a hard concept for you to grasp?
Yes, context matters in everything.

When you hear about rape or murder, do you bring up context? I don’t see any posts by you in the Ole Miss girl thread bringing up context. You didn’t mention there that the girl who got burned to death would have chosen being shot and dumped in a lake.

One of the bigger slave owners in Louisiana was a free black woman named Marie Metoyer. She had almost 300 slaves at one point.
Have you read The Forgotten People: Cane River's Creoles of Color? Marie Metoyer is prominently mentioned in this book.

Is he talking about one slave or slavery as an institution? There is a difference.
And no shite it sucked, spare us your hurt feelings.

I don’t remember posting in that thread at all.
But discussing broad historical concepts is a bit different than discussing a recent murder

That ole mis sorority girl was a slave to that ole miss frat boy that shot her.
He treated her like his property and she let him.
