So you can’t comprehend how a bad situation generations ago could prove a boon for their progeny? I’m just saying that most everyone that came to America, however bad they had it to start, benefitted their genetic line in the long run.

You think most black people in America would rather be starving in Africa?

The problem with this line of thinking is it is divorced from the fact that it is possible that the genetic lines that might have transformed Africa might have been removed. While it is possible that Africa would be as bad or even worse than it is also possible that it could be slightly or significantly better. If nothing else there are certainly genetic lines that were snuffed out that would not have been and line that exist that would not have survived. The only thing we can say for sure is their progeny had a different life to declare it better or worse is impossible to determine.

Made? No.

However, historically speaking his general point was correct.

Of New World African slave systems, the Southern US was the ONLY one that sustained itself, and actually GREW through natural population increase, after importation of slaves was prohibited.

For the most part, slaveowners were capitalists who put a lot of money into their labor (initial investment and maintenance) and it did them no good to have slaves that couldn't work due to injuries from discipline.

Slavery is abhorrent, but the world of Uncle Tom's Cabin was the exception, not the rule.

Maybe you deserve a good slave beating for trashing your coworkers and “reputable defense contractor” online and mentioning what your involved with there.

Just want to add, as far as you stating that you could leave your job, seek education, or move if you wanted. While this is all true in present day, it is not true when comparing free people and slaves of the 17-1800s. The vast majority of free people at that time had no choice in where they lived, what they did for work, or if they had the opportunity for education.

Slavery was a widespread existence throughout all of human history up until the last 50-100 years. Not one person on this planet was/is a slave in the conventional sense now.

On another note, wtf are your boss and coworker discussing slavery on company email? That doesn’t sound wise.

What part of Yankeedom are you talking about here? You never mention anything about this past the subject text.

And my boss is like, yeah, but in most cases after the war slaves came back to work for their owners

Not because the former slaves wanted to work for their former masters. These slaves exited slavery with no opportunity and no education on how the free world worked. In the end, the only way to keep supporting their family was to work for the former master.

While traditional or chattel slavery is all but wiped out there are a few small pockets of chattel slavery left, areas of Mauritania and Libya are the two best-documented currently.

The cited statistic on Wiki is that the number of "conventional" slaves in Mauritania is around 90,000.
