So I'm sending a email and my Boss and coworker are having a discussion about how slaves really didnt have it that bad.

This part is somewhat confusing. Are you saying this whole slavery conversation is taking place in email or that you are having a verbal discussion with them but for some reason told us you were sending an email while talking?

The problem with this line of thinking is it is divorced from the fact that it is possible that the genetic lines that might have transformed Africa might have been removed.

From Spleen's link:

quote:

If you take the total number of slaveowners and divide by the free population of the southern states, in raw terms, you’ll get a raw number of 4.6 percent. This seems to be the baseline for the standard claim. But the reality is far different, in many ways.

So what they did is take the number of white male head of households who owned slaves and then divided that number by the TOTAL white population to get 4%. That's really shoddy statistics and it's clear it's a trick done on purpose.

Back in those days a white male head of household might have 10 white kids. Certainly 5 or 6 children were common. While the kids might not have "owned" the slaves, they certainly lived in a household with slaves in it.

A better statistic would be to look at all white male head of households and count how many of them had slaves (ignoring minor children, etc.) That is to say, only count white male adults living on their own and then count how many of them had slaves. When you do that, you get closer to 30% in total and 50% in some states like MS and SC.

Welcome to Trump's America, where the most outlandish, un-American, historically blasphemous ideas are not only embraced but defended by stretching logic to its extremes, all in the name of political "purity".

QAnon, kids in cages, an American president basically calling a major American city a cesspool, startling increase in anti-semitism and racism, rise and mainstreaming of white nationalism....you name it, the cult will defend it.

Confederate apologists have been making these BS claims for decades. They're all aimed at minimizing the true horror and reality of slavery in this country before the Civil War. It's pure propaganda, and arguably one of the most effective propaganda campaigns in this country's history. It's the main reason why 150 years later we still haven't fully reckoned with the stains of the slavery legacy.

Caribbean slavery made American chattel slavery look like a damn tea party by comparison.

Yes, it was an awful institution and I wish it never would have been allowed in the US.

But it seems you lack perspective on how much worse it was in other parts of the world

What other areas of the globe were doing is beyond the point when it comes to our own mistakes and sins.

This is a horrible point you're raising, and also aims to minimize the horrors in our own country.

It's amazing how either uneducated you are or just plain stupid. Your little race card isn't working anymore because the truth has been seen. Quit being a fricking slave to those idiots who do not care one damn bit about you. Your blind loyalty is going to lead you to a path of nothing, like it has been for a very long time.

Down voting the truth, gotta love it. They know the truth and are scared of it because the free ride is coming to an end

Oh bullshite, we know how bad it was. It isn't that way now no matter how much your puppet masters try to tell you it is. Excuse after fricking excuse...

Some in this thread don't seem to know how bad it was.

To be completely honest, none of us truly do. The past cannot be changed, that's nothing new. People who keep living there though, will never succeed.

Then you are smarter than those who do.

I would say the majority of slaves had equal to or better lives than the Irish, Italians, and eastern europeans who came over in the 1800s to work in factories in the north. Long hours in dangerous conditions where you got paid a pittance. Slaves probably cost their owners more money than the small wage northern business men paid their workers.

frick all. I knew the influx of wackos to the PT Board was significant, but I had no idea that we had reached “slavery wasn’t that bad” critical mass.
