A gal in front of me just tried to pass an obviously counterfeit bill

I was at the Shell station and this woman threw a few candy bars on the counter and a big fountain drink and pulled out a fake looking $20. When the woman behind the counter told her, “we can’t take that.” The customer said,” oh, I must have grabbed the wrong one.” ( does everyone drive around with fake $20’s?)
She left the store and drove off, leaving her candy and drink on the counter.
After she was gone, the lady behind the counter said,” did you see what she tried to do?”
What possible outcome did the counterfeiter expect?!

A cashier that wasn’t paying attention or didn’t care.

Nothing. Except if should could have passed it. That’s why they do it.

Use larger fake bills to buy small ticket items. get real change back. Works best at cash only places
Back in college, one of my friends bought a bunch of fake 20s. and would go around during college football games buying programs, or anything they could, in cash.
Program cost $5 back then.. get $15 worth of real money back. no way to track them

If you get caught doing something wrong, apologizing and leaving asap is a pretty viable strategy. If she was a dickhead the cashier would probably be forced to get a manager. Meekly apologizing got the person out of the building and a manager won't do anything because it didn't escalate to him in the moment.

It probably works about 50% of the time

This is one of many reasons why you don't go inside gas stations. She probably parked her car in front of a pump as well.

Good thing she didn't get the cops called on her and eat her stash of fentanyl
