Why don’t you test your theory? Orleans Parish has openings as I post. Handle your business. If life is so good as a teacher (as you imply), then you won’t go back into your current field.

Jokes on you. I’m already a teacher.

Well, married to one and I play by military rules and we all know an active duty spouse is more worthy of respect and veneration than an active duty service member.

The administration at her current school (I think it’s like this at a lot of schools) is horrible. Her principal is a borderline idiot. They keep putting more and more stupid crap on the teachers that has zero to do with teaching. Which I think is really coming from the county administration. It’s a lot of “over educated” left thinking women that think everything has to be micromanaged.

Yep. My wife is at school by 7am.
Has no lunch or planning period.
Often has staff meetings after dismissal.
Then has to clean up, do the paperwork, prep for next day.
And…bring the shiat home. I can’t tell you how many times I have woken up at 2am to the smell of the laminator running.

And oh, did I mention she gets to teach 20 kids each day?

It’s the job she signed up for, but it’s not the job it used to be. “Admin” has ruined it.

People that think 3 months off each year is a great benefit should just apply for the job.

Right. What they're doing now isn't marketable and isn't worth more than it pays. That's my point.

Quit and close the school, just give me back my tax money, about 70% of what I pay in property taxes, back to me so I can subsidize private school.

I don’t get why teachers whine about pay and outside of school hours work. You know what your getting into before you pick the damn profession. If you don’t then you’re stupid and shouldn’t teach.

Kind of like Pro Athletes and "Load Management". Pay me MORE Millions, but I'm going only play 2/3 of the season.

I have been working/volunteering at my kids school for a little over a month. Full time 5 days a week. You know ow what I have learned?

Teaching is by far one of the easiest jobs out there in the right school.

To your question of what happens if teach teachers quit en masse - the shite heads who make teaching hard will go to the streets and the kids who don't will be educated at home.

We need ditch diggers as much as anywhere. With proper welfare and criminal reform ending public schooling could be a great step for returning this country to its former glory.

Yep. Teaching now isn't about classroom time actually teaching. It's all the other things that make it an impossible job.

Then add in dumbing down curriculum to lowest common denominator and you get why kids graduate high school and can barely read.

It's closer to 2 months and still doesn't balance out to the time they actually work the other 10 months.

I have family that are teachers. They have had a lot of admin work added to their plate since COVID and almost all of it is unnecessary. Writing detailed lesson plans, follow-up documentation, prepping for potential online learning, etc and it's pretty much expected that they remain after school, work weekends, etc to get it done. This is on top of the expectations of the things good teachers do outside of the job description that's wears on people.

"Breaking story: Teachers want more pay and less work...."

People whose pay and benefits have not kept pace with inflation and who are overworked and/or have sh*tty working conditions and rules generally do.

The point of the counterargument is that many other industries do all of that and then some without any of the perks.

Half of this board would quit teaching a couple days in with what public schools teachers put up with.

If they could do something else, they would. They aren’t conscripted into their profession. They choose it. STFU and do the fricking job you asked for or quit. But quit pissing and
Moaning about how much it sucks to do the job you CHOSE to do.

If these people had any higher level of skill than “babysitter”, they’d be in a job that pays accordingly. So they are either there because they’ve maxed out professionally or they like the job. Again it’s either by choice or it’s the best they can do. Just like the min wage worker at Popeyes. So quit asking for more money than your worth or go find a job that pays you what you’re worth.

And spare me about how they’re all gonna quit. They won’t. Most couldn’t handle a different job or they’d be doing it.

Let 'em go get a real job, 12 months a year, nights, weekends, and Holidays... They will run right back to 8a to 4p for a measley 8 months a year. When you work 2/3 a normal work year you can't expect something equal to others pay who work 12 months a year. SERIOUSLY? ..

You have no idea what you are talking about

Most teachers don't just get off at 4. They have to go home and deal with parents, grading papers, and doing lesson plans.
The job doesn't end at 4.

I agree. I never even indicated we would. People with means are going to send their kids to private schools or have them tutored in small groups.

Public schools will ALWAYS find teachers. Work eight hour days, only 177 days a year with students, retire after twenty years and have less and less accountability. The education will get worse, but teachers are not going to be hard to find.
