My dad was a high school principal and my mother was the dean of the education department at a local college. I'm not just talking out of my arse. The NEA and local teachers unions have supported and pushed progressive policies in schools for decades. Now they want to whine when the chickens have come home to roost.
This is a Louisiana based board.
Outside of EBR and Jefferson... teacher unions in LA don't do crap.
And they do even less in Texas.

So she worked 5 extra hours on Fridays, and some teachers work 5 extra hours on weekends
Depends on how they want to do it. Either take an extra hour per day, stay late on Fridays or do it during the weekend. I can tell you this, my wife never did any work during the summer, or holiday breaks.

Math and science teachers probably could be marketable,
In what? I was a certified middle school math teacher - my bachelors is in philosophy
I went to get a masters in library and information science instead

Do you call the off-season unpaid leave for athletes? You catch a salary, how you want to consider it spread is up to you… you are paid as a full employee
Unpaid leave? They may have gotten paid their salary for 9 months but it's definitely not "unpaid".

I am a scout leader and a volunteer at the district level. Our units have always been very healthy and had great leadership with succession planning. We have not been able to get volunteers to step up for many years now. Succession planning is fricked. The same people volunteer for everyone, and they are burned out. No one believes you when you tell them we can’t survive without volunteers.
And then an event is canceled. And then camp. And now entire units are dissolving. Parents don’t want to volunteer, they just want to pay someone else to do it.
My wife and I have had to coach or lead so many things, simply because nofrickingbody will step up.
We will have 26 kids in an age group for rec baseball, and not one parent wants to volunteer.
But they sure AF will all complain and scream when the team goes 1-9.

Not sure why most people don’t know this.
Because it destroys their narrative.

Eliminate the Department of Education and any non elected school board positions.
Take politics out of education and it Will instantly improve.

My mom has taught for 28 years. She’s retiring this year. They’ll hire two teachers to replace her for the same cost, at a much lower quality.

I was saying your offer to have people teach in one of the worst inner cities in America to prove a point was dumb.

A lot of principals and other administrative positions that no longer teach classes are on absolute power trips and are borderline running dictatorships.
Loudon County, Virginia is a prime example of this. They're not a school board, but a ruling dictatorship.

He didn’t stipulate otherwise. Nonetheless, he could go to St. Tammany instead. Is that better? At the end of the day, he won’t do it. I called him out accordingly.
Let me know when you find the link with me shitting on accounting.

I really don't see what else most of them could do?
Most don't have skills that translate to much in private sector.

I agree, a decent sized portion would probably struggle to find success (perhaps, as you suggest...most). It is hard to say.
I would suggest that Science teachers , Math teachers, and coaches would easily find work (by-in-large). English and Social Studies, not so much. Middle school and elementary...“Only fans?“

Alvin ISD south of Houston starts 1st year teachers at $59,500.
Alvin ISD
10-month contract in Houston ISD gets a first-year 56,800.
HISD
Goose Creek ISD (Baytown) gets you $59,500 first-year.
Goose Creek
These are not poverty wages.
These salaries are an anomaly. Goose Creek has to compete with nearby Barbers Hill. Houston is combat pay. Alvin has to compete with Clear Brooks of the world. My wife has 27 years and isn’t this high at her podunk setx school.

This is weird. I would think most people understand that teachers have to grade tests and homework, and they can't do that while they are standing in front of a classroom, teaching kids.
I agree. But most teachers get off at what? 2 or 3:15? and start at what? 7:30-8?
Most professions start at 7:30-8 and get off well after 3.

Most school districts - even the "good" ones - already have shortages. What's going to happen if teachers finally say that's enough and peace out en masse?
This is the corporate conservative goal. They want to kill public education so their corporate overlords can rake in that charter school money.

My staff usually is at work at 7 and leaves after 4. Official time is 7:30-3:45. So once again an uninformed post.

Great. I get to work at 7:30. I get off at 6 for regular days. Sometimes later.
The fact that "after 4" seems late to you proves my point and shows how uninformed you are.

You made an idiotic blanket statement saying teachers got off at 2- 3:15. Unless you were saying teachers began work before 6am you were implying they didn’t work a 40+ hour week. I put facts up showing you were wrong. My staff works more than 8 hours per day not including what they do after hours and weekends.
