I’m with the Balsamic Duck. Neither side hit a HR here, which is likely as it should be. The real issue was always whether to sign Olave to an extension bc of his injury concerns. There was no way to avoid paying in the neighborhood of this amount of you decided to keep him. I can live with this.

2020-2025 broke this board

Should also have a concussion retirement clause built in after year two.

is this a 1(current 5th year contract) + 4 yr extension? So he's locked in for 5?
Since we don't need more cap this year I think the Saints would have pushed to keep the 5th year option year as is and just add on, but he also got slightly less than I expected so maybe there was a concession.

so people need to keep context of his 33 pr year number cause that can't be compared to how it ranks in the nfl until 12 months from now.

For a concussion prone football player!

Damn, you are telling me we paid him more than $20mil per year !?!?!?
Great deal honestly.

Talk about overpaying. Good grief.
Gayle needs to sell the team.

We simply ignored his concussion history.
his concussion history is tied into the loss of value of his previous production that warrants his new contract.
Without concussions he probably gets paid more than London.
I also think a few teams would have given him more if we didn't want him or if he wanted to leave. Looks like he really wants to be here.

7th best receiver in the NFL last year with a turd throwing to him for half the season and absolutely NO ONE scaring defenses on the other side of the field
Guy has had 6 different QBs since he came into the league, some of those being Rattler, Haener, and Andy Dalton
Olave + Tyson + Vele is about $42 million
If you got the right guys, then that's not bad for a WR room.. especially compared to teams like the Bengals, Seahawks, Cowboys, etc.

Could have been worse, but I don’t believe in paying wide receivers. They’re just too injury prone and too frequently never deliver after a big payday. Granted, with a qb on a rookie deal, we actually have the cap space, so I’m not gonna hate on this too much. I just won’t be surprised if he fails to average more than 6 games played/500 yards receiving per season for the life of that contract.

We’ve had what, 3 legit #1 WRs since 2000? They do not come around often.

People have an opinion, stick to that opinion despite evidence that contradicts said opinion and continues to double down.
People just dont want to admit to being wrong.
I think thats whats happening to Olave. Last year proved alot but people still see him as unreliable.
Whatever, he may get hurt at some point. But I rather just start enjoying watching guys play than wait for the worst case scenario

I’m good with this, although at first I was a $80-100 million type deal for Olave but now that we have a talented QB on a rookie contract we can throw some extra cash to keep Olave, even if he’s more of a really good #2 or 1B guy to me. I think he and Tyson are going to work well together and watch out for Delp at TE as well. This is a very small window that we can give players bigger deals until it’s time to pay Shough. I really wish a good interior DL would cone available for sign or trade that maybe wants a new deal and his current team is being cheap (Vita Vea). The Bryan Bresee injury really hurt.

I understand the concerns about his injury history but has he had any concussions since Carr retired?
I’m only half joking

I think people like to conflate the term number 1 receiver with top receiver, because last year the 32nd receiver in yards put up 727, 857 in 2024, 892 in 2023, 823 in 2022, and so on.
Outside of 1 season Olave has clearly eclipsed those numbers. In fact he has ranked 17th, 17th, and 7th among receivers in yards the 3 years he didn't have Carr throwing him into early retirement.
He is CLEARLY a number 1 receiver, although last year was the first year he approached top receiver numbers.
