Contracts like this are only a big deal down there because it's the dirty south and not much money flowing down there economically. But everywhere else in the country contracts like this are just regular normal business. Lol

Seems like a pretty good deal for both sides. You can’t let Shough go into year 2 with zero proven top receiving threats.

Outside of sports, contracts like this are not normal anywhere. What business do you think regularly entails contracting an employee for $33M / year?

$31m per year that can reach 33m if he plays like a pro-bowler or 2nd team all-pro. 31m puts him at 10th in the league.

He also makes base salary $13m next year, and $23m in 2028. Guaranteed money is spread out as well.

How could they have structured this any better to protect against concussion issue? The team offered him top 10 money IF he can stay on the field, with a cherry on top if he can produce like a true #1. Chris bet on himself that he'll be able to make it 5 more years. (And by the time he gets to years 2029 and 2030, a 27m or 29m base salary will probably not even be top 10 anymore)

I'll try to look into it but teams usually leave the 5th year option year in and add years after, but not always.

Since we don't need more cap this year I think the Saints would have pushed to keep the 5th year option year as is and just add on, but he also got slightly less than I expected so maybe there was a concession.

I see the reports have since adjusted the figure to a 4 year $124M deal, and referring it to a $31M a year deal. However, if they are keeping the 5th year option, and this is a 4 year extension; then why would it not be considered a 5 year $139,493,000 contract, which would be $27,898,600/year and would have him as the 16th highest paid WR.

Are you saying Olave's risk of a head injury is equivalent to any given play of everyone else?

Would you be willing to answer the question I posed above? Do you think Olave's career would survive another significant concussion? Two?

The agent would only want the new years on the deal reported (the extension, which is how they are reporting it). If they included the already signed 5th year it would lower the overall aav and make it seem like he signed for far less, which the agent wouldn't want (and it is 99% the agent that leaks the details of a deal to the press).

That's why you have to read between the lines of what is reported sometimes, as he was already signed on a 1 year deal, and everyone has reported this as an extension rather than a reworked 4 year deal.

BUT sometimes the reporting can be wrong or misleading, which is why I am looking for verification whether it was a true extension added on after the 5th year, or if they reworked this year and added 3 years.

Any player can be forced out of the game by a single concussion.

As to prone. He got targeted in the side of the head going down. It was a fumble review. Frisco DB I think.

So he’s no more prone in your opinion?

You aren’t being clear.

And is he equally likely to be able to return from one any other player in your opinion?

I've heard players retired talking about over ten concussions. So what I'm saying is until a doctor says "son you need to quit today" you just don't know. What I do know is the team gave him 90 mil guaranteed after discussing the issue with a team of experts. So he'll I'm good if they are good lol

Poor Brees getting dragged through the mud for $100mm and now everybody getting it

Seeing the new details, this seems like a good deal for all involved and the Saints protected themselves. I hope it's a true extension so 5 years and this is as much of a "homerun" as you're gonna get. Shough needs a #1. Hopefully Tyson becomes a star and when he's ready to get paid in year 4/5 the. Saints can easily afford it as they'll likely be moving on from Olave or giving him a lesser contract.

According to Underhill:

quote:

Olave's base salaries over the next few years:
2026 - $1.29M (5th year option)
2027 - $13.6M
2028 - $23M
2029 - $27M
2030 - $29.76M

$35 million signing bonus

And of course none of those numbers add up to $124m, $132m, or who the hell knows what

Maybe they converted his original 15.5m base salary into a signing bonus that's included in the $35m signing bonus announce?

The base and signing bonus won't add up to any of the reported numbers as there are other bonuses and such involved, and if his base this year is that low that means they converted his 5th year base and spread it out as well, as his base was originally around $15 mil this year.

How many players in the NFL were sidelined for a significant number of games after a string of concussions? Olave was put in IR for 8 games after his 4th official concussion.

Didnt he go on IR because he got a concussion, passed protocol, then came back and Carr threw a ball two feet over his head against the Panthers?

7. 2028 per-game roster bonus: $1.36 million total ($80,000 per game); guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in March 2028 (but must be earned).

8. 2029 base salary: $27 million, $13 million of which is guaranteed for injury and becomes fully guaranteed in March 2029.

9. 2029 per-game roster bonus: $1.36 million total ($80,000 per game).

10. 2030 offseason roster bonus: $3 million.

11. 2030 base salary: $29.76 million.

12. 2030 per-game roster bonus: $1.36 million total ($80,000 per game).

The contract also includes $2 million in escalators for 2027 through 2030, based on performance in the prior season. The formula goes like this: $400,000 for being named a first-team All-Pro; $400,000 for making it to the Pro Bowl; $400,000 for 1,200 or more receiving yards; $400,000 for 101 or more catches; and $400,000 for 10 or more receiving touchdowns. (In four NFL seasons, Olave has hit none of those triggers.)

The $1.36 million in per-game roster bonuses for each of the next five years gives the Saints protection against injury. In 2024, Olave missed nine games, mainly due to multiple concussions. He started 16 games in 2025.

Of the amount, $52.653 million is fully guaranteed at signing. By 2027, $77.013 million is fully guaranteed. By 2028, $90 million is fully guaranteed.
