He's known for being the face of the Smashing Pumpkins/main songwriter (and for his insecure bloviating) more than anything, but he is actually quite an underrated guitar player. He is a great guitarist and has written a lot of excellent riffs and solos (Cherub Rock, Geek USA, Soma, Hummer...on and on with Siamese Dream, Zero, etc.).

I've always thought Jerry Cantrell was underrated as well. Overshadowed by Layne Stayley's vocals (which were amazing) and their vocal harmonies together, but Cantrell always had interesting , dark and very melodic and memorable guitar riffs and solos. He made Alice In Chains so versatile because he wrote really pretty acoustic stuff, but also wrote really heavy and dark electric stuff too that made them one of the biggest bands of the 90s.
