I've seen Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias.
Elliot Randall never gets his due.

Dickey Betts...
Is it Dickey Betts alone playing "Little Martha" or is there a 2nd guitar in there. I can't figure it out, but when i hear Chet Atkins or Tommy Emmanuel play, I can see how it can be done.
I love "Little Martha". I've only just come to appreciate The Allman Brothers talent.

Who was the guitar player for Tesla?
The songs where he pulled out the acoustic were great.

Neither Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, nor Chet Atkins could be considered underrated. They're all seen as three of the greatest guitarists of their genre and beyond.
Yeah these guys are the class of the field. I never knew how good Jerry Reed was until about 8-10 yrs ago. I just knew some of his songs from the 70's.
I haven't seen him mentioned and he is not under rated, but Tommy Emmanuel is amazing.

Duane played lead and Dickey played rhythm. “Little Martha” is the only song Duane wrote.

JJ Cale- what a player AND songwriter…
Absolutely!
I'm amazed also that Stephen Stills hasn't been mentioned.
Another great player/songwriter, and he kind of gets lumped in with the bands he played with. I've seen him live 3 times between the mid-80's-2014, and the guy can absolutely wear a guitar out.

Thanks Bjorn. Yeah i don't know where my head was, I knew that was Duane that did Little Martha. I knew he was really good when you listen tot he solos and such, but what I heard Little Martha I had a new appreciation for his talent.
Is Derek Trucks as good as I hear others say he is. I've head him play but it's usually always incorporating a slide and nothing really blows me away about his play.
Maybe I just haven't heard him really jam or get after it. Am I missing something.

I would almost argue that Chad Atkins is the greatest guitarist of all time

Does Prince count?
And the answer to OPs question is Terry Kath from Chicago.

I think Danny Gatton would be considered underrated because a lot people don't even know who he is if they're not guitar players.
