Dickey in my opinion wrote the worst Allman Brothers song (rambling man) and the best (Liz Reed and Jessica) Jessica’s structure made a whole lot more sense when I realized how influenced Dickey was by Django Reinhardt.

Lifeson had the misfortune of being in a band with one of the greatest (many say THE greatest) rock-and-roll drummers of all time.
Richrath was just not very flashy but could play the crap out of a guitar.
I think the phrasing I would use for guys like this is probably not underrated as much as overlooked. I suspect that both of these guys are recognized for being great players.
