Cast for starters. Two oscar winners on the cast: Ford and Alec Guinness. I seriously doubt there will be any such on the prequels except for Liam.

On a cheeseburger level I could watch them all, but I'd sum up the Lucas mail-in directing with that one, painful dinner table scene. You know-the one with young Darth, his terrible Mom actress, flatlining Portman, JarJar & poor goddamn Liam trying to tow the whole sh#tbox along.

I've loved Star Wars since I was 5.

I don't hate the prequels but they, at least the first 2, aren't very good overall compared to the others.

Ep. III was really good, the only thing that kept me interested in Ep. 1 was Darth Maul. Ep. II, you at least get to see Jango Fett and the other Jedi leading up to Ep. III.

The one I can really do without, with the exception of Darth Maul, is Ep. 1.

I can't stand Anakin as a little kid. Combine that with the annoying Jar Jar..... blechhhh

"Let's try spinning, that's a good trick. Woahhhhhhhhhhhhhh......"

Portman won best actress for her role in Black Swan.

I'm a casual fan of the series and enjoy the story line and just appreciate the character of Anakin Skywalker. I just don't understand why hardcore fans hate the prequels.

I'm with you. I like all three of the prequels well enough. No, they're not outstanding cinema, but who cares? There are obviously things about each of the movies that bothered me a bit, but nothing that made me just loathe them like most people seem to.

There were LOTS of good things about those movies, but people seem to only want to focus on the bad. But when you have fans as passionate as Star War nerds, it is expected. The funny thing to me, though, is the hypocrisy from msot fans...most of them blast the acting and dialogue in the prequels, completely ignoring the fact that shitty acting and dialogue existed in the original trilogy as well. And there hasn't ever been a SW movie that isn't cheesy...that's part of what makes them great.

The only good thing about the prequels was the saber battle in Phantom Menace. Best of all 6 movies IMO.

I don't mind Part 3, which is better than Return of the Jedi mainly because ROTJ is not nearly as good as you remember. I'm not a Star Wars die hard, but I hated the prequels because they are bad movies that are horribly written. They are pretty much everything I hate in movies -- multi-million dollar effect extravaganzas without a trace of character or story. I didn't care for a second about anyone in the movie except Obi-Wan, and a lot of that is carryover goodwill.

If you're spending $500 million on the movie, how much more is it to hire someone who can write?

The original trilogy was able to get past the pretty wooden dialog by some great performances. These performances, Ewan McGregor aside, were not duplicated in the new trilogy. I don't think the new trilogy was some betrayal or anything. They just were bad, boring movies.

Doesn't change the fact she was awful in the star wars movies.

Anakin is a petulant baby. The whole reason he became "evil" is because he didn't get what he wanted??? Wahhhh
The shitty naboo scenes with anakin and the queen. She's telling anakin she doesn't want to tempt him, yet she's wearing skin tight leather and eating fruit like a cathouse brothel worker.

agreed. the stories sucked. the writing sucked hard. the characters were not worth caring for. they go from fart jokes to killing innocent kids at the drop of a hat. just a mess. bad casting but honestly people like portman, etc... had nothing to work with from the writing/directing

Because they saw the original movies when they were in their teens, and they saw the prequels in their thirties.

edit: I realize this is a huge generalization.

Of all the bad in the those three movies, and there was A LOT of bad, the one that makes it hardest for me to watch is the transformation they attempted with Anakin. Why didn't they just make him a kid who wasn't very nice to begin with (no real conflict), that would have given a much easier and possibly more gradual transformation to the dark side, it definitely would have been more believable. All they had to do was make Obi-wan somewhat blind to it due to his friendship, which is kinda what you get out of the original story when Old Ben tells the story to Luke in the original.

It also makes the scene in ROTJ more believable since the Emperor didn't ever see Vader with conflict. I mean for three movies he basically a good kid who is somewhat confused and is willing to whatever it takes to save his family, yet the Emperor never see him turning on him to save Luke. The two sets of films just don't fit in the main story line.

Revenge of the Sith was the only one that was worthy of the prequels

The first two were really bad
Natalie Portman's acting could've been utilized better.
Hayden C was really bad in that role as well.

Sums it up beautifully.

The arc of Anakin Skywalker was oozing with potential and Lucas completely whiffed.

Everything else aside - bad acting, bad writing, annoying characters - Lucas could have save the prequels on that story arc alone.
