Awesome! Thanks for the heads up!

I do like how the doc goes after the original Woodstcock, too. Most of what we think of as Woodstock is the movie and didn't actually happen. The original concert was a disaster as well, and it's a miracle more people didn't die or get seriously hurt. In that way, 99 is a perfect tribute to the original.
It's funny how 94 kinda gets off light: there was a show, people sort of liked it, nothing memorable happened (save the Green Day mud fight) and we went on about our lives. It's a grat Gen X metaphor, sort of this forgotten middle child, but it's not like it did anything to merit the attention either.

It's also a huge difference between them and the Stones. The Stones almost almost always gave credit and Mick Jagger bought Chess Records when it went under to preserve it as a historical landmark. There was an ethical way to be a blues-rock band, and Zeppelin simply ignored the model.

I'm sort of obsessed with Woodstock 99, which is a conflagration of some of the worst decsions ever made in pop culutre. If you were expecting a positive spin in a doc on the most infamous concert outside of Altamont, which killed the Woodstock brand and featured several deaths, mulitple sexual assaults, and a riot then... I don't know what to tell you. It was a disaster.
But y'all must have a different copy of the doc on your app because the one I watched was pretty clear that it was the organizers who were abolsutely at fault, and their attempts to defelct blame onto Limp Bizkit was sort of pathetic. They locked up a bunch of kids on asphalt in searing heat, covered the place in raw sewage, denied them water, prevented them from sleeping, and then provided the angriest music on the planet to amp them up more and... well, it was a pretty toxic mix.
I do think the DMX thing was weird, as he was about the only person who got out of there with his reputation increased. When he died, people referenced that show as one of his high points. That was a star making turn for him.
I do think the doc underplayed just how disastrous a decision it was to have techno going all night long on top of metal all day, as the noise bleed essentially made it impossible for anyone to sleep, even if they could on a literally shite-covered field. It was like being the subject of a psy-op campaign. Of course the kids snapped, everything pointed the to that, and the naked greed of the prmotoers, at the expense of the health and safety of everyone there, was truly appalling.
The funny thing is they pointed to Coachella as the New Way, and if you look at modern Coachella... well, it has a lot more in common with Woodstock 99 than its humble beginnings. Those big festival shows are ruthlessly greedy these days, though they've learned the lesson not to deny people water.

God, I love James Wan.
I don't udnerstand anyone saying that they never got horror vibes from the Pixies. Their whole catalog is basically a horror movie, from the beginning of Nimrod's Son all the way through the Palace of the Brine. Bizarre imagery and unique soundscapes are what the Pixies do. It worked great here.
Is the movie as scary as The Conjuring? No. Is it as genre busting as Saw? Probably not. Is it as thematically consistenet as Insidious? Nope. Does it hold the record for the most time I have said "what the frick" in a horror movie that was not directed by David Cronenberg? Absolutely.
Just a movie that gloriously goes for it, and goes absolutely all in. It's the Jupiter Ascending of horror movies, and I mean that in the best possible way. This is the sort of movie someone makes early in their career, trying to make a name for themselves by going all in. Instead, this is a late career studio film from a guy who has made so much money he no longer has to pretend to give a damn what anyone thinks they want. This was a big budget horror movie for indie horror fans. The group of people who will like it is quite small, but those of us who did are going to absolutely love the hell out of it.

Team Zebraman.
This was MY heavy metal parking lot. I grew up going to shows at the Cap Center. It is distrubingly accurate.

re: Jake Holmes - 1967 "Dazed and Confused" before Jimmy Page stole it for Led Zeppelin

This is one of the worst kept secrets in rock n roll. It was pretty common knowledge Page stole the song, but that he also improved upon it immensely. It's barely the same song, and Page admittedly took it to another level.
It's nowhere near as egregious as the way they stole from blues artists. Whole Lotta Love is a blatant rip of You Need Love, and without the massive upgrade in the song. The Lemon Song is a pastiche of several Howlin' Wolf songs, most notably Killing Floor. And basically the entire first record is cover songs, which weren't properly credited for years. Willie Dixon suing Led Zeppelin is practically a cottage industry, and how he spent the better part of his last decade on earth.

1. As a fan, the 3 game windows are a lot of fun as it’s a pretty good simulation of a tournament group stage.
Totally agree. And a great point about how its good practice for the roster management of the World Cup group stage.
quote:
2. I think Tyler Adams needs to be the US captain.
Yup. He played the full 270 and didn't miss a beat. I don't ge tthe feeling Pulisic wants to be the captain, though he is our undisputed best player. Allowing him to siply have the burden of beng the great US hope and not also a leader of men might be best for everyone. Also, Adams earned the honor. He's our most indispensible player.
quote:
3. As much as I love a team with pulisic and Reyna as attacking wingers, I think one of these two needs to play centrally in the midfield for the USMNT.
A lot of the problems in the first half against Honduras were caused by Greg's nearly insane dedication to building pressure from the outside, even to the point of pushing clear outside players to the middle. He corrected the error, and if I squint, I can see the concept behind it, but... stop it. Reyna as a winger isn't gonna be an issue for a while, but this team is at its best when it has that central spine of Brooks to Adams to McKennie to Pulisic. This isn't rocket science.
quote:
4. The next window of games must produce 7 points. Anything short of 7 and the US will be looking at the rest of qualifying happening during the mls off-season and needing points from the two Mexico games.
Win at home, draw on the road. Though they did it the wrong way in the opening frame, that formula netted 5 points. You're right, now it needs to yield 7, particularly looking at the matchups. I can live with 6.
quote:
5. A. Robinson and Ream played well. Maybe the Championship really is the GOAT league for preparing people for concacaf away games.
Promote Miazga. That dude is built for the knife fights of CONCACAF. I can't believe how well Ream played. But we don't need the most skilled team, we need a little bit of edge to put around our skill. Play in bard wire, bring in the barbed wire guys.

Apparently coaching soccer is like Earl Weaver's quote about baseball, you just need 11 guys named Robinson.
This was obviously a must win, but I don't think the USMNT's issues in the first two games were about their quality. They played well against El Slavador, just couldn't score. They did play worse against Canada, but a draw was a fair result.
This was a gut check game, even moreso when down 1-0. And this team has looked like a bunch of talented kids without much guidance or experence. WC qualifying is tough everywhere. No one skates through. But the good news is this team answered the bell when they absolutely had to.
Of course, a huge part of that is finally finding a guy who can finish. If Pepi is the answer at striker, it solves a lot of issues. I'd also point out that the team poured on four goals without McKennie, Renya, Steffen, or Dest. Which sort of shows the problem wasn't really talent.
At the end of the day, only results matter in qualifying. The USMNT got 5 points, which was the bare minimum bar for success in this window.
The next window is crucial. Not just two home games, but a home game against two winless teams, including a Jamaica side which was the only team to lose twice in qualifying. The road game is one of those don't sleep on it games, as Panama has 5 points, and it's critical that the USMNT gets at last a draw there.

The thruth is, we don't know what is going on in tha tlocker room, but we can make some educated guesses based upon the things Broski has posted from the media and quotes from the team.
And one of the biggest challenges for any international side is to act and play like a team. There's limited practice time and let's face it, your paycheck comes from your club. The national team is not your first loyalty, so the most important job of an international manager is somehow crafting a feeling of a team.
That's why this was a good suspension. If some of the players were asking for it in public, it at least hints at a fractured locker room, and you have to nip that sort of stuff in the bud. By suspending one of his best players for a crucial game, Berhalter can now honestly tell his team that no player is above the team. And while that stuff is sort of hokey, players eat that sort of stuff up.
If they play their cards right, this could be the turning point for the team where it all comes together. McKennie can come back into the fold, and the locker room can preach that it places nation over self. This can be that unifying moment where they become a team, and show their emotional commitment to the USMNT.
It's a gutsy move by Berhalter which could have blown up spectacularly.

Amazon had done this previously with books, updating editions on people's Kindles without permission. It wasn't to specifically target content, but the thought process behind it is sinister.
You have no control over your streaming library. You're just leasing it, at someone else's whim. Get physical media. You can then rip it to a hard drive and stream it locally with Plex. Books, music, movies... to quote an older show: We control the horizontal, we control the vertical.

Forget children's cartoons, its one of the best shows being made right now, period. I genuinely laugh my arse off during episodes. It is a shockingly accurate picture of parenting.

Who should've started that didn't?
Berhalter's most widely panned lineup decision, to start Tim Ream, actually worked. Dest looks like he probably can't be our left back and should go back to his more comfotable RB position, but that was a popular decision to experiment, and I won't knock him for that.
His problem is he doesn't have a striker. He tried Aaronson and Sargent, and that seems like a reasonable lineup decision. The midfield looked thin without Pulisic, but his hands were tied on that front.

It was simpyl an ugly match all the way around, but the good sign is the team never looked rattled and didn't play much on its back foot. They were miserable in the final third, a function of not having Pulisic and still searching for a striker, but they had the bulk of the chances in the game.
The USMNT won the xG battle 1.78-0.32. Now, xG isn't everything, but it is a good rough tool, and it show that the US dominated the game, but simply couldn't finish. They should have found that goal, and played well enough to do so. If they play like this throughout qualifying, I'm not worried.
Only Mexico won, so it's not like we lost pace on the standings. But it turns Canada and Honduras into more important games. You have to beat Canada at home, and Honduras is pretty much the same quaity as El Salvador, and it'll be on the road. You wanted to beat one of the two, now it has to be Honduras.
For a young squad missing its best player, this wasn't the worst result, and I do like how they played overall, save for the finishing. Who would've guessed we wouldn't be talking about Tim Ream?

We really, really rely on Kalvin Philips. When he doesn't play, we are a different team, and not a good one. He's able to make so much of Bielsa's system work.
Koch is not my favoite player, but he was set up to fail. I'd rather play Struijk or Dallas in the CDM role if Kalvin can't go. Struijk has the legs for it and I'm convinced there's nothing Stuart can't do.
Also, it's been roughly 15 years without fans in an EPL Leeds-Man U game so I'll spot them this one but... stop with the Munich shite. It's not funny and I know its a throwback to a more... colorful era of fandom before EPL got all family friendly and dull, but we can still be rowdy and even mean without mocking a legitimate tragedy.
I'm honestly not too concerned. We lost big to Man U last year, too. And the game was close until we sort of caved late, but... man, it doesn't get much easier. Everton is a must have result. At least a point. I'm willing to let the first one slide, but that showed just how far we have to go.
Sign another defender. Cooper is showing his age. Koch is meh. Llorente is always hurt. Struijk is a kid. I can't beleive our best regular defender is STILL Ayling. and he scored a goal! Way to go! Dallas is our next best defender and he's not even a defender (ok Llorente is our best backliner, but I need him on the field as he played just 15 games last year).
