The new Star Wars box office legs need to come from the teenage girl market. I think if they can break through the stereotypes around Star Wars and tap an entirely new market for the franchise by showcasing that this is a story about a young girl who rises to the top of the galaxy, then the possibilities for this trilogy and beyond are endless.

I'll be seeing it again.... I saw it in Imax3d and I want to see it in 2d.

Definitely. Divergent and Hunger Games have shitty female role models and let's not even begin to talk about that shitshow Twilight.

Uhh, if they try to make this a girl power thong that's exactly what it will be.

OP Updated. $238M on the weekend
Posted on 12/20/15 at 10:49 am to ell_13
It'll end up being close to $300 million (and that's just domestic BO).

No. $238M is an estimate and counts today (Sunday) as well.
It has already crossed $500M total worldwide.

Basically, after 3 days, everything moving forward is a net gain for Disney. fricking ridiculous.

It's still the weekend, isn't it?

Estimates are released Sundays by the studios. Always have. Can the number change once official numbers come out? Yes.

$500 mil and it hasn't even opened in China and two other countries yet, my god

China has been a problem for Disney for some reason. Parks, Star Wars, etc. It won't be very huge there.

The thing this movie has going for it is a large chunk of the audience from Thursday will probably see it again before the end of 2015. Maybe even 3-4 times. I expect this thing to break every record ever recorded.

China doesn't care for the forced diversity message these movies are putting out. They even took Boyega off the poster. It'll still be huge there though.

How Avatar made that is beyond perplexing.
It has no lasting impact. No one cares about it at all. Just...bizarre.
America is not the only country in the world

Key among this opening is the fact it has not yet opened in China, which generated over $99 million for Jurassic World on its opening weekend. However, as the Wall Street Journal pointed out earlier this week, Star Wars isn't the known quantity in China it is elsewhere in the world. In fact, it wasn't until June of this year that the first three films in the franchise were first screened in China at the Shanghai international film festival and the Star Wars prequels only grossed a combined $18.7 million upon their 1999, 2002 and 2005 release.

quote:Meh. The Chinese market has changed dramatically in recent years. I think it will still make 150-200 million, if not much more.
Not a good chance of it being "huge"
