oh if you don't see the forced diversity in this movie i can't help you

and if you don't realize why that may create issues in china, then i can't help you again

*ETA: it didn't impact my viewing or opinion on the film, but it was as forced as the stuff added in to sell toys

Neither Finn nor Poe were written as any particular race, they hired the best actors they saw.

Rey was written as female just to change up the Luke character for this trilogy for variety purposes.

This persecution complex among white males in the deep south is sad.

So it was like pretty much every film coming out of Hollywood, designed to make money and spread liberal social ideas.

the forced diversity

tomato/tomato

although, as i said last night, this doesn't bother me b/c in this universe, it's the force who does all the cool shite so a female can physically compete with males without any issues

finn is terrible and would be terrible no matter what the actor's race is.

where did i bring up persecution? i'm not rallying for the support of the white actor or anything

Well Kathleen Kennedy Wanted a strong girl presence. Rey was the lead for this reason IMO. The multiple interviews with JJ and Kathleen talking about "girl power" show this IMO

With that said. The casting was awesome IMO, Daisy was great.

She's great, but that's incredibly naive.

i don't get why it's so hard for some people to admit examples of pandering/forced diversity

Their sense of well-being rests on it.

This was the case in the early days of the prequels. People are too invested in it.

As I've stated previously, I think from the day it was announced, whether or not the protagonist would be female is actually rhetorical. That's a very organic way to switch things up and we haven't had a female Jedi before. I think just about every filmmaker would have gone with a female protagonist with little hesitation.

Many movies these days are really getting caught up in the girl power movement, but this is not one of them. Rey is entirely believable as a character first and a girl second. She's not out to prove that her sex is worth respecting and can do anything a male can. Katniss for instance just comes off as such an entitled bitch and is cold toward everyone. In many ways Rey is the complete antithesis to Katniss and just works so well.

The fact that Disney bought this franchise shows. Disney has a great respect for female characters and knows how to write them. Aside from maybe Brave, I can't think of a film they've done recently that reeks of the "girl power" movement. Since Belle, they've known how to make strong characters out of these women and not come as condescending in return to their male audience. Rey seems more to be straight out of a Miyazaki movie and that first 4 minutes bonding with Rey is just brilliant for building up her character. Not one line of dialog is spoken by her, and you know everything you need to know about her without saying one word. Kudos to Disney over this.

Meh. To me, forced diversity implies that it's something that is so atypical that it had to be forced in there. A female and a black male don't really fit that; although I'm sure their casting was intentional, as it should be as a business and creativw process.

Meh. The Chinese market has changed dramatically in recent years. I think it will still make 150-200 million, if not much more.

Yeah, the Chinese are very interested in American culture, and they'll want to see it just to see what the fuss is about back in the States. There wasn't nearly the amount of media exposure available back when Revenge of the Sith was released compared to now. And you can find Star Wars in pretty much any DVD store over there, so they shouldn't have much of a problem viewing it.
