Theaters make an average of 90% of their profits from concessions. When I worked for Carmike I was the "assistant manager over concessions" for awhile. Carmike's logistic system for tracking loss, counted every lost cup, popcorn bag, and bag of candy, in the system as the price a customer would pay. So for margins it takes what would actually be a loss of $5 in paper and plastic value, and count it as the workers having lost over $250 for the day. This hyper focus on concession loss is common, not an exception. Because it's where the profit comes from. Tickets do not produce enough revenue for the studios AND the theaters

This is exactly how gas stations work as well. They make frick all on the gas while nearly all their money comes from the shite they sell in side like soda and snacks.

So TFA made $50 million on Christmas Day 8 days after it's opening.

Yeah, that happened.

I'd hate to have to drive anywhere around Disney's corporate headquarters with all of the Brink's trucks backing up to unload cash.

I went today for the third time with two friends who hadn't seen it. We went to the AMC on O'Neal (BR). It was packed! There were some small groups of 2 and 3 sitting on the floor/steps. I think AMC sold a few "extra" tickets.

The man is worth $5 billion all by himself. I doubt he's shedding any tears over a film franchise he was just going to let gather dust in his basement. There would have never been an Episode VII if he hadn't sold the rights.

You can't read sarcasm on a message board.

The laughing face might have been a small indication.

Budget was $200 mil. Not sure how much they spent on marketing.
How much did they actually spend on marketing, though? I'm not sure I remember a commercial.

I mean, I've seen Covergirl, I've seen Dodge, I've seen Subway... don't those companies actually pay Disney for the right to do that?
Other than that, I can think of 2 trailers.

I suspect Disney actually came out ahead in the final marketing cost, what they spent vs what they were paid, for TV spots, regardless of the movie itself.

Or it could have indicated that you were being a douche? That tends to be another use for the laughing face on this website.

You're right. You're not a hillbilly. You're from the bayou where there are no hills to be found. But the implication is still the same. No person in the South has a right to make fun of someone from being from the South.

I've always heard that and believe it....but I question it when I'm waiting in line for 5 minutes while looking at unattended concession stand registers. You'd think cinemas would be dialed in as far as getting people their stuff.

I'm still not sure that this movie will pass Avatar in worldwide money, but it will easily hit $800million domestically. $900 million isn't out of the question. It'll settle somewhere just over $2 billion worldwide. Maybe $2.2 billion. I can't see it going over $2.5bil unless it makes Fast 7 type money in China (~400 million).

It has yet to open in China. And no, it won't be that big.

I'm guessing 2.3 worldwide. $850m domestic.

The floor in China will be $200 million. I have no idea how much competition it will have from their own movie releases, but I'd all but guarantee it makes at least $200 million in China.

No one knows what will happen in China. They don't know hardly a thing about star wars. The OT wasn't released until very recently and the prequels did $19M total between the three. But the landscape there is so different now.

Why the frock would it not have opened in China same time as here?

Now days, those Asians hack the movie files and stream bootlegs online instantly.
They probably will all have watched it online for free before it ever debuted there...
