I think we can all agree Covenant was trash, but I’m a big fan of Prometheus and would love for him to finish the trilogy. One major problem is Ridley is 88 and has a couple movies in the queue ahead of a new Alien movie. Another is he hasn’t really made a good movie since The Martian. Seems his new movie The Dog Stars isn’t great either, but I’ll reserve judgement until we get some audience reviews.

quote:

“Treasure Island,” written by “Adolescence” screenwriter Jack Thorne and starring Hugh Jackman, will begin filming in November. He has an adaptation of John Harris’ World War I novel “Covenant With Death” upcoming. He’s interested in a script he was recently sent that’s set in Africa and is “about how we’re punishing the planet.” And he’s hopeful that his long-delayed Bee Gees biopic, set for production at Paramount, will go ahead. “We wrote it,” Scott says. “I met with Barry [Gibb]. But right now I don’t know where we are with it. I hope it comes together and Barry does as well.”

Also in the works is the third “Alien” prequel, which fans have been anticipating since “Alien: Covenant” was released in 2017. Scott says it will pick up with David (Michael Fassbender) creating a “brave new world for himself.” Scott is fascinated by the character, a malfunctioning AI.

“AIs can go off,” Scott says. “And if they do, it’s like a bomb.”

As a sucker for all things alien Prometheus/Covenant back to back was monumentally disappointing. Stacked casts and they were both so dumb.

I don't know if disagreement is allowed over here at the MTV board but I never understood the almost universal hate for the first two.

I really enjoyed them.

Loved the first. Hated the second.

Why wouldn't you be able to disagree? The characters especially in Covenant are irredeemably stupid to me. Prometheus was also overly serious and had too much Damon Lindelof style mystery writing for my taste.

The first movie was beautifully shot.

The characters were just schizophrenic and completely moronic.

For example, one of the scientists becomes terrified after seeing the extraterrestrial corpses and runs away but then gladly reaches out to touch the alive snake which then kills him.

Covenant had the “spores” infecting the characters, which I didn’t like.

I guess I didn't know Covenant was after Prometheus. I liked Prometheus. Do I need to watch Convenant? I didn't know there was triology.

Why?

The whole thing seems to exemplify what I feel about Ridley Scott, which is that you tend to get a masterpiece or something horribly disappointing, with not much in between.

He could hit it out of the park this time but the last two attempts at it fell so flat that it doesn’t look to be worth the effort.

Remember Prometheus was at first an Alien sequel, then it wasn't, then it was a prequel, then it was a "universe" film. He never zeroed in on what he wanted it to be and that's why it felt directionless in the end.

Covenant was closer to a core Alien movie, and it felt like one, even it it had some misfires. I liked it enough.

I wish we could get a movie based on the Colonial Marines.

Prometheus had some interesting ideas attached to it and fleshed out the world building significantly

Covenant was just a cheap Alien sequel

I loved Prometheus but Covenant was so disappointing. I was hoping to see what happened in between the movies, Engineer homeworld with them present, etc. and it was a big missed opportunity.

I'll be in for this though

Prometheus suffers from the galactic stupidity of the characters’ behavior and choices to advance the plot. Scientists and trained researchers/spacefaring experts would not have taken the risks that they took nor placed themselves and the mission in jeopardy they way that they did. Multiple times you are left with “WTF are they doing?” moments that completely derail what should have been a great movie. But I did enjoy it.

Covenant was just a rehash…men against monsters and David’s motives don’t really land for me

This is exactly how I feel. I think the choice to kill Shaw offscreen led to a whole host of bad decisions in Covenant. It may be a fool’s hope, but I believe Ridley can right the ship if he lives long enough to make this.
