When Saving Private Ryan first came out, I met a vet who had been in the first wave at Omaha Beach. He said it was the most realistic rendering of that battle scene that he had ever seen. Said the only thing missing, and he emphasized only was the smells of battle, men's bowels emptying, all the cordite in the air, the smell of blood, guts emptying, etc.He said that when he first heard all the "pings" of bullets flying around, he still ducked instinctively. He also said that the stories one hears of men crying for their mothers when shot & dying is not an exaggeration. He still hears those cries at times.

Watched 12 Strong over the weekend. While it is a good popcorn flick, I wouldn't call it one of the greats. As far as the Afghan/Iraqi theater, I'd rank it behind both Lone Survivor and American Sniper.

finally watched Downfall. was really good. Fact that Ian Kershaw loved the performance tells you how good it was.

started watching the Long Road Home.

Force 10 from Navarone

Where Eagles Dare and Kelly's Heroes are both great too.

Haven’t seen mentioned

The Battle of Britton - has some of the best dogfight sequences.
12 O’Clock High
Murphy's War
Sergeant York
Flying Tigers.

Surprised no mention of one of my favorites - Last of the Mohicans

Others that have been mentioned but I love - Kelley’s Hero’s
Dirty Dozen
Stalag 17
Great Escape
Bridge over the River Kwai
Saving Private Ryan
Glory

And the historically accurate - Red Dawn.
