Lightning will instantly stop any field sport. What about motorsport? Seems like the same issue with fans in the stands and pit crews out in the open.

F1TV is pushing the Eddie Jordan documentary right now. I watched it and it was great, especially if you watched F1 way back in the 90s. It covers all of the Jordan F1 iconic moments, starting with Eddie Irvine unlapping himself against Senna, and Senna looking for him after the race and punching him.
It also covers something that I mentioned earlier in this thread. In one of Jordan and David Coulthard's recent podcasts, Jordan bitterly recounted how because he needed a Honda engine deal, he said he had to let the highly-regarded Heinz-Harald Frentzen go to make room for Honda's latest F1 hope Takuma Sato. But the timing of events makes it a weird story.
In 2001 Jordan was able to get works Honda engines (along with Honda's works BAR team). Frentzen was then dropped from the team mid-season, and Ricardo Zonta and Jean Alesi finished the season in his seat. Reports are that Frentzen and Jordan had "disagreements" about the direction of the team. Sato did come on board in 2002 to keep Honda happy, but it seems like a convenient story to blame the Honda situation when Frentzen was fired mid-season instead of at the end of 2001.

I want Portimao back on the calendar.
Algarve might be my favorite sim track to drive. Probably not a great F1 track. A good motorcycle track and probably a good WEC track.
The original Estoril layout with the fast Turns 1 and 2, and without the super tight chicane that it has now later on in the lap, was pretty good. The current track is no fun.
But yeah, real road courses are a dying breed on the calendar.

An all-female series is just a terrible idea.
There should simply be more support for individal women entering F4, and if any of them can compete, then continue that support into F3.
There have been numerous competent women racers in recent years, including Simona de Silvestro, Katherine Legge, and even Danica Patrick, but finding one who can compete in F1 is going be very difficult, and an all-women series does nothing to help that search. A woman racer with F1 potential will only reveal herself in F3.

On the YouTube live broadcast of practice, I got mocked for saying in the chat that it makes no sense to have a hybrid powertrain on an oval where there is no braking. Someone responded with "Is this your first time watching oval racing? The drivers lift into Turn 1 and 3, blah blah blah."
Well, I just read this Marshall Pruett article that explains how it works. Aero / engine braking into Turns 1 and 3 doesn't provide enough energy. The harvesting actually happens with a manual activation (pushing a button or pulling a lever) at full throttle along the 2-3 and 4-1 straights. The harvesting saps top speed, so there's a net loss of energy, not a recover of energy. So this description I think supports my argument that it's dumb because the batteries aren't being replenished by passive mechanical harvesting (thus restoring some of the lost energy), but rather by using more energy (the engine) for tactical reasons (to provide a future boost of power for passing). So as a tactical tool the hybrid might make things interesting, but the hybrid system is not being used for its original intended purpose. And yes, I know that in high performance street cars, hybrid systems are primarily used to boost transient performance, not be more energy efficient.

Yuki tested the dominant RB19 (2023) today at Silverstone. It will be nice if this, along with the additional upgrades coming in Miami and Imola, results in Yuki being a regular member of the top 8 cars. To satisfy the team however, he'll need to become a regular top 5 or 6 finisher, and at the moment it doesn't seem particularly likely.
Yuki said that it's only when you do a true 10/10th lap (just the final lap in Q1, Q2, and Q3, not the banker lap), do you experience the quirks of the car that can sap your confidence, so it's a slow process of gaining the knowledge of how to get the absolute maximum out of the car. This is why he's pretty close to Max in practice, only for the gap to get really big in qualy.

Maybe one day, the up-and-coming Red Bull team can regularly get both cars in the points.

All right, the TD F1 Championship results are in!
dg42.net/TDF1/race-results.php?race=5
Winner of the TD F1 Saudi Arabian GP is gatorhater08, with a crushing 12.8 point gap over P2! gatorhater08 won on the strength of getting six of the top 10 positions exactly correct.
The podium is filled out by theone in P2, and bikerack in P3.
Here's the championship table: dg42.net/TDF1/index.php?table=full
One more player has now scored points for the first time. gatorhater08 enters the championship table in style at P10 with a win in Saudi Arabia!
MikeD's four-race points scoring streak is now over. But Grassy1 is currently on a four-race points scoring streak, and has an opportunity to extend it in Miami.
sorantable is still leading the championship on the strength of two wins. But others are starting to catch up. I'm really liking the spread of points on the championship table after five races, although jefforize and the four guys who haven't scored yet might disagree.

The contact between Yuki and Pierre has been ruled a "Lap 1 incident," which is apparently a specific concept. Both teams called it a Lap 1 incident, so no one was calling for a penalty, but the FIA said:
quote::lol:
"Both parties agreed that this was a lap one incident with no party wholly or predominantly to blame. Although we considered whether this was properly a lap one incident or really an incident between two cars on lap one."

Zak may not have to manage anything if Lando keeps making mistakes at a higher rate than Oscar.

Hadjar should be P8, but great Williams teamwork.

Hadjar is 3 seconds behind Albon with fresh, softer tires. He can get by him, although Albon did a great job holding him off earlier.

The hard tires are doing really well.
I wonder if Lando and Hadjar can go long enough to switch to softs.

Hadjar qualified behind Lawson for the first time. But Hadjar has already gained four positions and is two positions ahead of Lawson now.
And Hadjar is in the points, and is on hard tires. He's in great shape.

I thought they were bringing shenanigans with the brakes, no?
So as I was looking up what upgrades teams were bringing to Saudi Arabia (before the official FIA documents were available*), I saw that each "source" of news was reporting different things for each team. It was hilarious. People hear bits of information here and there and report it as news. It's all cllickbait.
Marko confirmed that an upgrade package is coming in three stages, at Jeddah, Miami, and Imola. If Red Bull copy the brake duct thing, it will be there by Imola.
*Not sure where people are downloading the official FIA documents, but the FIA twitter account is a great source of information: x.com/fia.
