I liked 13 Hours, but Hurt Locker IS the absolute worst war movie ever produced. fricking Hot Shots is more accurate.

As a combat vet, my two favorites are Restrepo (for a real life documentary)
Yeah, I should have included it - one of the better combat documentaries, ever.
I never finished Hurt Locker - for all the praise it got - just awful. I loved 13 Hours for what it was, "Michael Bay makes a modern war movie" - G-d bless him, but he's a bad filmmaker. That one was enjoyable.

Empire of the Sun deserves mention.

I LIKE Hurt Locker as a pure movie
Of course, it's an absurd movie and I can see why vets would find it so

Land of Mine was good.
More of a post-war movie - teenage German POWs forced to clear thousands of mines from the Danish coast at the end of WWII. Foreign language, but not a ton of dialogue.

Hell try watching it with an EOD dude
Somewhat related, but I spent nine months at the camp in Jordan where they filmed the movie. God I hated that place.
My top five:
1. The Longest Day
2. Midway
3. Bridge on the River Kwai
4. Zulu (book it's based on is excellent as well)
5. Patton

Just read the synopsis. Geez. What a downer of a story.

Hurt Locker is a really good movie. Not a great war movie. But a really good movie.

Based on info from this board yesterday I rented "Come and See" last night from Amazon video for $2.00. It is a 1986 Russian made movie on what life was like on the eastern front vs the Nazi. I am still in shock over it. Really a different type of "war movie" experience. The directorial style is rather amazing and his use of sound and sight was incredible.
Absolutely brutal and worth watching of you haven't seen it.
