Yup.
Doesn't help she is a space cadet all the time. Hard for the audience to form any attachment with her when she is always in lala land

I’d argue the show hasn’t really displayed Alicent as a character you can sympathize with. She’s a self-serving, conniving woman who at almost every turn has done things to serve herself. Just this last episode she fails to comfort her son who is struggling with being King, she’s still fricking Crispy, and she even tries to trauma dump on poor Helaena who is just grieving her kid.
I think that’s the case for the most part of Season 1. First episode of Season 2 where she lit the candle was the first time she displayed any type of sympathy for Rhaenyra and her side of the family since Olivia Cooke took over. It made me want her to get her fricking act together, though I know she won’t.
Despite my disdain for her, she’s still written and acted really well because I don’t groan when she’s on the screen like Crispy. It’s just so interesting to watch someone SO fricking hypocritical and be such a godawful parent to each one of her children while thinking she’s being a dutiful mother. She’s raising them like Otto did her, the way Tywin did his children. Just political pawns in their schemes. And now she’s finally realizing it

I doubt I'm alone in my inability to keep all these white-haired people with rhyming/identical names straight, so I had to look up who she is. That's his sister, good reason for her to be in lala land.

I mean by our societies standards, sure. But in Westeros, Targaryeans marrying their family is normal to them. She is a dream seer and can see glimpses of the future which I am sure does much more damage to her psyche than voluntarily banging her brother. Not to mention there are rumors that her children were actually fathered by her other brother Aemond so she doesn't seem to mind the incest.

Is that just from the book, or I am just totally not remembering this from the show?

Has not been mentioned in the show. I have not finished the book yet so I cannot comment as to whether or not it is mentioned in the books. I saw it on a youtube video.

Ok Mick imagine you’re the lord of a vassal house or even a great house and the blacks petition for your support. You’re responsible for 4-6k fighting men, grey beards, farmers, subjects, your hold and house compliment and all of the families that go with this. You're telling me you wouldn’t think twice about taking a life/death oath for you and all these other people to serve someone who mocks her oaths?

there are no right answers here if you are a nobleman
Choose green get dragoned by black
Choose black get dragoned by green
don’t even begin to talk about oaths. This is mutually assured destruction

People forget that the pacing is what made GoT seasons 1-6 so great and when things got sped up in season 7-8 the show turned to shite.
The pacing so far in HotD has been much closer to season 1-6 which is a good thing.
I was just about to post this. GOT was at its best when there was a lot of buildup followed by the huge “holy shite” moments. It went downhill when every episode started trying to be epic.

Anyone else love the Otto character? That actor is killing it

a big difference between GoT and this show is the lack of adult big name actors. Sean Bean, Charles Dance, Peter Dinklage Lena Headey etc are all heavy hitters. So is Rhys Ifans. He was incredible as Rasputin
the acting overall in HoTD is excellent. I’d never heard of any of these actors except Ifans Smith and Considine but the show is exceptionally well cast

Matt Smith is a big name actor. Many know him from The Crown.

I honestly never heard of any of these people until GOT outside of bean

I think you may be mixing up another future Targaryen civil war involving an Aegon and Aemon(d). Aegon The Unworthy bought into the rumors that his sister wife slept with Aemon the Dragon Knight and was the actual father of the the heir to the throne. So, Aegon legitimizes Daemon Blackfyre and the rest of his bastards which leads to 3-5 rebellions.
I could also be forgetting lines in the book about the potential of Aemond sleeping with Heleana. A lot of the stories run together.

I wish Helaena had a bigger role in the story.

From top to bottom this show’s acting is phenomenal.
But holy shite Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole is on another level. He’s so good at being a smug, hypocritical piece of absolute human garbage. Even as a borderline secondary character he’s absolutely reached the same level of hatred as Joffrey and Ramsay for me even though he’s not nearly as cartoonishly evil as those two.
Great writing. Great performance. frick Criston Cole.
