In addition to the aforementioned Kill List, I'm thinking of other random movies I stumbled upon on Netflix during it's golden era (2011-2015 or so)

Kill List
Better Living Through Chemistry
It's a Disaster
Safety Not Guaranteed
The One I Love
The Conspiracy
Alien Abduction
The Wailing

And a ton of documentaries

Knuckle
The Institute (2013)
The Ambassador (2011)
Cleanflix
Best of Enemies
The Overnighters

I was a older teen lying in be done night and stumbled upon the original Thing from Another World (1951), and absolutely loved it.

It was nothing like the 1982 movie (which is great in its own right), but I just remember thinking it was way too good for a movie that old.

In terms of physical media, I did a ton of research before renting so I wasn't ever that shocked, but the one exception was this gem:

Randomly my friend came over to my house (never really happened unless I was driving his drunk arse home) and my brother watched it with us (also rare in those days because of personal issues causing conflict between us).

Put that shite on and it was like 90-100 minutes of gut laughing. Had no idea that movie was going to be as great as it is.

Bottle Shock. Nice little movie about the first blind tasting between French and California wines. Chris Pine, Bill Pullman, and the late, great Alan Rickman.

Wristcutters, A Love Story. It came on after I had watched something else, and I simply didn't change the channel.

Donnie Darko - re-watched several times after. Great little cult movie. "They Live" also falls into the same category

My Cousin Vinny- I sorta disliked the advertisements but when I turned it on by accident I loved it

Cool Hand Luke - a classic I found by accident and loved immediately. The Wild Bunch was another around the same time

Wife and I went to the theater to see some movie(can't remember which) but it was sold out and then decided on National Treasure. Honestly never even seen a trailer for it beforehand, and it was great!

Not "great", but It's Complicated. I was on a flight to Europe and selected this movie on a whim to watch. For a RomCom, I found it to be very funny, and it had a pretty clever (and probably realistic) storyline. Streep, Baldwin, and Steve Martin were really good in their roles too.

I found The Wind and the Lion by chance about ten years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

The Bashaw of Tangier: "You are a very dangerous man, Captain, and your President Roosevelt is mad."

Capt. Jerome, USMC : "Yes, sir!"

Temple Grandin; Claire Danes plays Temple, an austic woman that becomes a top scientist in the livestock industry. It’s based on a true story.

And a couple of Katie Holmes movies that we watched on Prime recently; The Secret: Dare to Dream and Miss Meadows (she plays a quirky hit-woman).

Early 80's pay cable was a great time to discover movies that had very little hype for their theatrical releases.

My Favorite Year
Diner
Christmas Story

These were movies that we stumbled on (HBO, Showtime, Movie Channel).

Speaking of My Favorite Year and Diner... My wife was in college and heard about Diner while it was in the theater, she couldn't remember the title and saw "My Favorite Year" was playing and assumed from the description of Diner that she was buying the correct tickets. Wrong movie but zero disappointment.

Gladiator. Stopped on it thinking it was the Russell Crowe movie was pleasantly surprised to watch a boxing movie with Brian Dennehy and Cuba Gooding Junior.
