I feel like this has always been tough for Hollywood. You either get a good movie that is complete fiction (Gladiator), or you get an accurate movie that isn’t very entertaining (Hannibal, I enjoy it but that’s because I’m a historian).

So which movies are the best at both getting ancient history correct AND telling a good story.

Too me ancient history would constitute anything pre Middle Ages, maybe early Middle Ages pre Charlemagne

There really aren't any. Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus might be the closest and even it has major historical inaccuracies.

I mean its hard to say a movie about an "ancient event" is mostly accurate. But really i think thats the reason there arent many that take on the challenge.

I really cant think of any i've seen that havnt already been mentioned here that would fit the 'mostly accurate' criteria.

Here’s the thing about Spartacus. We know basically nothing about the man other than he’s from Thrace and rebelled as a gladiator. We know most of the battles he fought but have no sources on his plans, his thoughts, anything he said or really did.
So the movie is entirely made up by necessity. They did seem to get the events we know about in there at least

You do know Commodus was an actual Roman emperor who rigged gladiator games, correct?

You would love History Buffs on youtube if this is something you're seriously interested in. Guy says that Waterloo (1970) was the most realistic war movie ever made. But the whole channel is him pointing out historical inaccuracies/accuracies in old historic war movies.

What about that movie about jesus where they say he pretty much had the flesh stripped from his back?

The movie that made Mel Gibson filthy, rotten, stinking rich.

Was that historically accurate?

not in your timeframe or probably the scale of movie your looking for, but the script for Dreyer's Passion of Joan of Arc is based almost exclusively from the original court transcripts.

plus its a fantastic movie.

Tacitus connects Jesus to his execution by Pontius Pilate.

Another account of Jesus appears in Annals of Imperial Rome, a first-century history of the Roman Empire written around 116 A.D. by the Roman senator and historian Tacitus.
