Too me ancient history would constitute anything pre Middle Ages, maybe early Middle Ages pre Charlemagne

This might be a tad outside Middle Ages but "Shogun" was excellent.

More films:

Henry V

Masada

You do know Commodus was an actual Roman emperor who rigged gladiator games, correct?

Bruh.... because Commodus was a real person you’re going to argue that Gladiator wasn’t fiction??

Commodus was also loved by the army until the very end of his reign, trained very hard to be a gladiator and would murder cripples, or poor schmucks using dull led swords in front of the coliseum crowds, he thought he was the greatest gladiator to ever live. He used to host big game hunts where everyone would just watch him shoot arrows at lions, ostrich’s, etc....

Dude was a fricking loon, he was also assassinated by his wrestling partner Narcissus, he had a wife and almost definitely did not have the hots for his sister. Oh and he certainly didn’t fight in the arena against a disgraced general who brought an end to the emperors and gave control of Rome back to the Senate.

It’s a fictional movie my man

I'm treating a mini-series as one long move like I did with Shogun. Pete O'Toole was in Masada.

There really are no historically accurate movies about the ancient world.

But that’s not to say that there aren’t little parts of movies that get it right here and there. Costuming, set design. Props.

It doesn’t bother me that much, though because if someone is interested in the ancient world, they aren’t going to stop at the movies’ representations of it. They will pick up a book.

Here’s the thing about Spartacus. We know basically nothing about the man other than he’s from Thrace and rebelled as a gladiator.
We know he was a Roman soldier prior to being enslaved into the games. Nothing he did outside of the Third Servile War was of any historical consequence, so who cares? He was killed in battle trying to "have at" the general of the other army, not afterwards with the "I'm Spartacus" scene, but as far as major events, it's reasonably accurate. Definitely no gay bath scenes, though.

The TV show actually gets a lot more of the details correct.

When was this said? You said "complete fiction".What exactly is your definition of "complete fiction?"Pretty sure what my definition is

The movie was an outline of a real emperor who in fact rigged phoney gladiator fights he was involved in and his father, Marcus Aurelius was an actual person.Lucilla was a real person. And Rome fought in Germanic wars during that period. Sorry but it's not "complete fiction"...which means the entire story and characters were made up or a Novel like Ben Hur.

I mean, how do we know the details of any actual events that took place 2000+ years ago in any movie?

Who said any of this was true?

Historical, period piece movies are made all the time with just an outline of characters and events with the rest just filled in but they aren't "complete fiction"

Red Cliff is really good. I don't know how accurate it is though.

Yeah, it had some inaccuracies but nothing totally out of left field like Braveheart or Gladiator.

Yeah, We don’t know much about the distant past, really. Any pre-1860ish historical movie won’t even have the benefit of photos. So we don’t know what most people looked like, much less what they said or did. The best that can be done is get the big events as accurate as possible (based on our limited knowledge) and then fill in the storylines with contextually consistent dialogue and characters. So we’ll never have a completely accurate historical movie Bc no one even knows what that would look like.
