Wait so your rationale is essentially “same way it is for humans”?
That elves have genetic traits? Sure. I guess. We know they have kids because Arwen is Elrond and Galadriel’s daughter. O can assume they also have genetics.
quote:
And yet “there can be black humans” is NOT how it works for humans.
That’s cultural.
Elves 1. Aren’t real 2. Aren’t humans from a cultural standpoint.
So arguing that they would have the same views of race as Texas is borderline retarded.
Also again, as fictional characters they can have whatever culture the show runners want.

The new Star Wars trilogy sucked. I don’t think the black storm trooper is why. Or even the fact that the lead was a woman. It was all just poorly written.
You can go back to my posts back in 2012 and I was quite insistent the lead needed to be female. Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and Oscar Issac are really good actors as well and they couldn't save it.

quote:Exactly.
Exactly. Fans of that show have been fairly ecstatic about the casting even if they're apprehensive of the upcoming live action show. I was pissed back in the day when they whitewashed Avatar because it undermined the source material which was a fantasy rooted in the Second Sino Japanese War. You change them to white, then that everything and the major context of the series. Instead it switched it to Europeans vs Middle Easterners, which makes no sense.
quote:Yep, and not a single white actor and everyone is happier for it, because it holds to the actual show.
That's good casting right there and makes sense within the context of it's universe. This live action Lord of the Rings does not.
I noticed that SammyTiger completely ignored that post.

Thats so far from the point i was making its absurd. It’s also so fitting that you cant understand a basic point and are calling others retarded. Unearned intellectual superiority is ON BRAND.
Black people arent indigenous to Texas. It takes a lot of historical context to explain the racial make up of that state. Thats the point.
Ethnic groups/breeds dont all originate from one place. And they dont sustain without cultural reasons. This is true for animals and humans alike.
You dont just “have” different ethinicites. You not getting this doesnt make you better than other people. It means you dont understand basic anthropology.
Unless you can point to some established lore where “this elf was born beneath a Gardanesian tree during a solstice, and therefor will be of a darker variety” or some bullshite that explains why this elf randomly looks exactly like a black human then yeah, we (people who understand how ethnicity works) are going to have a shite ton of questions.
Imagine landing on an island and there being a bunch of Polynesians and one white dude and thinking nothing of it lol.

It’s the exact point you made.

Ok…. This is fiction.

It’s an adaptation so that’s the lore is what they make it.

You missed the point
Someone asked “how do you explain that there are POC in this show but not the movies”
They’re different takes on the same IP.
Just like the different Batman movies.
Just like I wasn’t surprised when the LOTR characters were animated by Ralph Bakshi. This isn’t produced or directed by Peter Jackson.
Comparing Lord of the Rings to Batman is fricking nonsense. Batman lives in modern America (at least 1940s onward) so to be honest Batman's race isn't that big of a deal. Scruffy and I have brought up Avatar which is an appropriate comparison. Lord of the Rings takes place in an ancient mythical Europe that was largely inspired by World War I and II while Avatar is in a mythical Asian inspired environment inspired by the Second Sino Japanese War. They both tick to the exact same tune on their origins just they celebrate different cultures.
I would be furious if they cast white people in the live action series and was furious when they did it with the film that is not to be named. If you put Europeans or Black people into Avatar, it undermines the source material that has Asian and Inuit roots weaved throughout it. Same with Lord of the Rings with the exception of the Haradrim. Debate that, because Batman is a piss poor comparison to a mythical fantasy series.

At no point did I talk about people in Texas “views on race”. I’m sorry you can’t read.

This is such a simpleton fricking argument. Fiction still has to have explanations for how things are.
I’m starting to realize that you aren’t being intentionally obtuse.

Ok cool.
You clearly Loved it for its ethnic purity.
I assume so because you literally refuse to actually have a conversation.
No, I love it for its themes, values, heart, symbolism, complexity, extreme intricacy, and characters. The magic is cool, but this is where Lord of the Rings shines.

What’s absurd about a black elf?
Well, my point was more along the lines of the fixation on race in general is absurd. But now that you mention it, yes, a black elf in Tolkien's LOTR universe is absurd. Especially with zero exposition on the what, wheres, and whys of the situation.
Isn't there gonna be like an interelven relationship in the storyline? You know, a flaxen-haired elven beauty brings home a dark elf and Papa Smurf doesn't like it? A Guess Who's Coming to the Spring Feast? sort of deal? The Mildred and Richard Elving story? Maybe an angry white elf bitching about miscelfegnation and all the little helfricans running around?

This has certainly been fun to read this afternoon. The doubling down and tripling down has been entertaining. He knows he's wrong, but insists on continuing to be the flag bearer of idiocy.

I’m not so sure now.
I think he’s just not smart enough to understand why a curious person would need basic explanation of things. He walks outside and says “sometimes the sun is out and sometimes it’s not, who’s to say?”

Yeah, he refuses to talk about the actual apples to apples comparison with Lord of the Rings and Avatar and just continues to call/heavily imply I'm a racist when I was more pissed when white people were cast in the live action abomination than I am about a black dwarf. Instead he wants an apples to oranges comparison with Batman, which is idiotic. Batman is merely tied down by a Gotham City and billionaire identity and nothing else.

But the explanation can be “elves can be black” and that can be the whole answer.

this is why the tolkien kids protected the brand.
once the kid died, that shite was on the market, and this is what you get.

“Decent job” way to start.
And we’re back down to “somewhat appropriate” the rest of the thread goes as much as you would think.
Lots of bitching about the liberal agenda.
TigerDroppings is never happy. You underestimated that.

So they’re announcing their pronouns before their titles when it’s pretty clear… haven’t Avatar fans been raped enough by M Night Shyamalan? This is going to be a nightmare even if I think it’s been somewhat appropriately cast.

Who the frick are you to say otherwise?
There is lots of color variation across lots of species.
Some random som evolutionarily based.
Elves aren’t human.
You don’t know shite about elf DNA. Without natural selection for some skin color variation could go wherever.
Simpleton
Tell me how many genes control skin color in elves. If they live forever so they benefit from extra vitamin D or protection from UV rays.

Wait. So you are no longer saying that he has “at least one black elf parent” “just like humans” and now you are saying elf babies could possibly pop out of their moms all different colors like a litter of kittens? Are you saying that black elves come from the same area as white elves and just somehow developed simultaneously with the exact same external stimuli but this one dudes family just…doesn’t mate with the white ones?
Or are you just going to jump to what ever lillypad allows you to maintain this because in the end, you like blackwashing and any reason is a good one?
