And then the flood gates opened? Seems like that should have possibly been a bama/Saban situation. I know Oklahoma had many good years. And Colorado a couple. But that machine we Saw in the mid 90s you’d think 6 titles since 73

He started taking advantage of Prop 48 and had a ton of depth and players that couldn't get into school anywhere else.

Prop 48 was introduced in 1986 and modified by Prop 16 in 1992.

That's true and it was basically out of the equation when the Big 12 started. He still realized that he could take advantage of it, regardless when he decided. Lawrence Phillips, Frazier and a host of others couldn't pass a 5th grade exam.

In the 80s aside from games vs LSU, Nebraska couldn't win any bowl games. Bobby Bowden told Tom Osborne that he didn't have enough speed on defense and skill positions. Osborne then started recruiting from places like California and Florida to get athletes.

Because Tom Osborne is the biggest hypocrite this side of JoePa. He put on these sanctimonious airs (while, at the same time, painting Barry as a cheating reprobate) about "doing it the right way". After gagging like choke artists in big games, Dr Tom sold his soul and started to bring in the criminal shitheads in Lawrence Phillips and Christian Peters. I guess it's only bad when those turds played in Norman. Plus, the infamous "county scholarship" program got shut down.

Osborne was given the national championship in 1994 because he had not won one and his time was running out. IIRC he shared with Michigan in 1995.

Plus the Huskers made good use of steroids, which wasn't unusual, I saw it up close with Jimmy Johnson, but running a drug program for teenagers is not exactly ethical behavior.

He had to play Barry Switzer every year (went 5-12) and he kept getting beat in bowl games by faster more athletic teams.

If the question is “Why didn’t Osborne win a national title from 1973-1993 but won 3/4 from 1994-1997?” there’s a few reasons but this is the main one:
Osborne’s one-dimensional offense struggled against teams that combined a physical defense with a strong offense, and this was more commonly seen in earlier years against prime OU, Miami, FSU, and some key OOC opponents.
In 1994, OU was in the toilet and Miami (while still good on D) lacked the offensive firepower of its peak teams. If Miami had just had a Bernie Kosar or Vinny Testaverde or Steve Walsh or Craig Erickson or Gino Toretta or Ken Dorsey instead of the undrafted Frank Costa, they probably win that game. They were arguably one overthrown pass from it as it was.
(Didn’t have to play PSU either.)
In 1995, OU was in the sewer and Florida sucked at run defense.
In 1996, they got shoutout (in between scoring outputs of 55 and 65 points) against a fired up Arizona State team because their running game got stuffed and they couldn’t throw the football. They also lost to Texas because they couldn’t handle future NFL All-Pro Priest Holmes.
In 1997, OU was in the treatment plant and Michigan was in the Rose Bowl.
OU owned Nebraska for years (11-1 when both teams were top ten in the Switzer era) because they played great run defense and could score in the wishbone days. FSU and Miami dominated Nebraska because they often had guys destined for Canton on D and usually were good (if not very good) on offense.
Nebraska had some great teams in the mid ‘90s. Don’t get me wrong on that. But they also had a lot of great teams from 1973-1993 that would have had a good chance to run the table against the 1994, 1995, and 1997 opposition - with rock bottom OU, less FSU and Miami, less OOC competition, and bowl ties preventing matchups against the best teams.
There wouldn’t be as many 1994-1997 players on the All-Osborne team as you might think there would be.

This is it in a nutshell. Recruiting back then was more regional, and a team filled with guys from plains states wasn’t going to outscore Florida State or Miami down in the Orange Bowl.

Using your logic, they are all frauds, even Saban. They all sacrificed whatever morals they had to take in guys with low academic credentials and awful morals. I believe that these coaches genuinely thought they could rehab the misfits into men of upstanding character, but it still boiled down to wanting that athlete on the field.

Bobby Bowden didn't pretend to be above that. He openly said he got a second chance when he was young and believed in second chances for others.
