Sorry, zero shot 4.5 million was owed without Shohei knowing.

Yeah, the interpreter would have been cut off well before the 4.5 unless the bookie already knew Shohei was very involved.

Yeah to extend that much credit knowing the likelihood it gets made public is extremely risky. Someone running that operation has to have an out

The bookie was bragging to people about having a connection with Shohei even though the bookie said he never personally contacted Ohtani so he probably expected Shohei to cover the interpreter's deficit either because that's what the interpreter promised him or because Shohei had done so in the past.

Stereotypes once again coming to life: Ohtani, the obsessive Asian gambler.

WTF? Dude someone bet 4M of HIS money, and I'm to believe his interpreter did it all with no one's knowledge? No thanks

It still hasn't been explained why Shohei's team was present and totally fine with the original Ippei interview when the story was that Shohei was covering his gambling debts.

Also, that same day, Shohei and Ippei were still palling around in the dugout in Korea despite Ippei having already done that original interview.

No. Baseball players get paid way too much.

Plus the guy isn't staring at his bank account every month paying bills and wondering if they are going to shut off the electric this month.

This stuff happens all the time to the rich and famous.

I can't imagine the guy goes to federal prison so Ohtani doesn't get in trouble for betting. If there is anything to it the feds will find out.

Everything is a conspiracy these days

Mizuhara's betting records, according to a spreadsheet obtained by authorities, reflected total winnings of $142 million and total losses of $183 million during this span, "leaving a total net balance of negative $40,678,436."

Somebody has taken a very serious loss.

I bet they knew Ohtani had a gambling problem, which is why they backloaded the contract. To protect himself, from himself.

Looks like interpreter admitted to stealing and did over 19 THOUSAND bets. Also, not a single one was made on baseball

just my guess is that it made Shohei look like such a good guy, covering for his pal and what not.... plus, he's such a huge star in the sport and a likable person that they probably figured no one is going to think Shohei was making bets and/or betting on baseball....

it was a pretty stupid blunder on their part to allow the interview, only to have to recant and correct the story after the fact, but whatever...

saving face in the face of all the intense scrutiny, and/or Shohei didn't know the actual amout that was stolen and was told a much, much smaller number, so he may not have actually been as mad as if he knew the larger, true amount.... dunno

it's all sketchy as hell, and parts of it make no sense, and i think that's why it's so intriguing of a story

Asian people love gambling so much. Nothing about this story surprises me.

I guess the feds are in on the coverup. Or Dodger fans. Reported today:

The former interpreter for Shohei Ohtani stole more than $16 million over two years from the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar to pay off gambling debts to an illegal sportsbook, according to an affidavit filed by federal authorities Thursday.

Federal authorities filed a complaint accusing Ippei Mizuhara, 39, of bank fraud, which can carry a maximum fine of up to $1 million and/or up to 30 years in prison, according to federal sentencing guidelines.

"I want to emphasize this point: Mr. Ohtani is considered a victim in this case," U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said during a news conference in Los Angeles.

Estrada added that there was no evidence Ohtani had any knowledge of Mizuhara's gambling activities or use of his bank account to pay his debts. He said investigators combed through years of text messages between the two and found no discussion of gambling.
