When the podcast hosts asked Goodman if it would be a "good thing" if the A's do complete their relocation to Las Vegas, she responded by saying: "I personally think they've gotta figure out a way to stay in Oakland and make their dream come true."

Goodman added: "I just know that (owner John Fisher) -- longtime successful family -- in my opinion, needs to listen to the people that are up there. It's their team."

She should be recalled. This is the mayor trying to throw away billions in economic development. She's the mayor of Las Vegas.. not Oakland.

She's also 84 years old. Time for maw maw to hit the bricks.

Dumb thing to say. Oakland is collapsing. Calling it a third world shitehole is a disservice to third world shiteholes.

Hmmm... didn't the Tropicana resort in Vegas already shut down because that's where the new stadium is being built?

She doesn’t want Oakland suing Vegas over the move.

“We didn’t even want them. We told them to stay in Oakland.”

This only makes sense for a mayor to say if the move costs her city money they can’t afford and true polling has shown residents have little support for it.

It also seems it’s about where the A’s want to move and that they rejected where the city wanted them.
quote:

She said that the A's relocation plans to the Tropicana site don't "make sense" to her, explaining that the city had offered the A's what she believed to be a superior site -- one located in a historic part of town that featured seven access points from local highways. The A's rejected that site, opting instead to be located on The Strip. That decision perturbed the mayor, who repeatedly noted that the area suffers from traffic congestion woes.

I didn’t know or just forgot that the city doesn’t have jurisdiction of the strip. I should have remembered the sheriff being the main law enforcement involved communicating about the mass shooting of the outdoor concert.
quote:

The A's ballpark is planned for a nine-acre parcel on the Las Vegas Strip and Goodman said the congestion makes the site less attractive than a larger site in north Las Vegas, which she proposed. However, the mayor and the city do not have jurisdiction over the Strip, which falls under the oversight of Clark County.

Is the stadium actually in Las Vegas? Or is it in Paradise, that little unincorporated area where all the resorts are?

Holy economic ignorance Batman.

quote:

A new sports facility has an extremely small (perhaps even negative) effect on overall economic activity and employment. No recent facility appears to have earned anything approaching a reasonable return on investment. No recent facility has been self-financing in terms of its impact on net tax revenues.

She should be applauded and used a model for all to stop this horse shite corporate welfare of spending billions in tax payer dollars to build stadiums

For doing what the majority of her electorate wants? They DGAF about the A's and want nothing to do w/the corporate welfare the A's want to relocate.

How are people still falling for the stadiums = massive economic benefits BS in 2023?

The people of Vegas DO NOT WANT to fund another stadium. She's doing what's best for Vegas as the A's are ALREADY showing themselves to be shitty partners by trying to force their stadium onto the strip instead of putting it somewhere that won't be a massive PIA for traffic.

1997

The impact sports had in 1997 might as well be 1890 compared to the present day.

Especially when it comes to baseball. Stadium can't host Super Bowls, Final Fours, CFP championships, bowl games, and it's an awkward concert venue. People are going to visit Vegas anyway and the investment violates the law of diminishing returns (or satisfies it, idk)

This is just wrong on many fronts the numbers are larger now but the underlying economics are same. Zimbalist and Noll were the pioneers in the field I guess that’s why their OG study shows up first but subsequent studies show the same.

This is from 2022, same conclusions

LINK

quote:

Though findings have become more nuanced, recent analyses continue to confirm the decades-old consensus of very limited economic impacts of professional sports teams and stadiums. Even with added non-pecuniary social benefits from quality-of-life externalities and civic pride, welfare improvements from hosting teams tend to fall well short of covering public outlays. Thus, the large subsidies commonly devoted to constructing professional sports venues are not justified as worthwhile public investments

This guy on X has a link to a paper from 2023 saying the same.

The statement aside, I can’t see Vegas supporting a baseball team like they do the Raiders. I picture a lot of empty seats in August.

But TV money is 2/3 of revenue so who cares I guess.
