So claims by the people benefiting from Corp welfare that it generates “ billions in economic development “ is cool but when someone looks into and says actual it doesn’t is “ruining” sports

I’m sure his emphasis of those points are MUCH smaller than they should be.

Based on what? That it reaches a different conclusion than you’d like? But of course we can’t use data, that’s “nerds” ruining sports.

How many studies studied Las Vegas?

There’s nothing special about individual locations.

quote:

A funny thing about studies is when you have a preconceived notion, it’s pretty amazing how a study aligns with it…

And saying it generates billions in economic development isn’t a preconceived notion? Also how do you know the people doing the studies had “preconceived notions”.

quote:

$1.5 billion is peanuts these days.

It’s always peanuts when it’s OPM (other people’s money)

quote:

The math isn’t the same as a local stadium for a city like Milwaukee, where the bulk of fans don’t spend the night

And you know this how exactly? Also there aren’t zero fans from out of town that go to Brewers games but none of that justifies paying for it with public money.

quote:

And you know fans are far more likely to make a trip to Vegas than Oakland or other boring destinations

People go to Vegas anyway. How many people at Knights games went to the game because they were in Vegas already or we’re planning a Vegas trip and just scheduled to go to a game, if the arena wasn’t there they still would have gone.

This is the mayor trying to throw away billions in economic development. She's the mayor of Las Vegas.. not Oakland.

It is certainly debatable if this would be a net gain for the taxpayers of Las Vegas and Nevada at large. Certainly be a great deal for the Athletics.

Then ask them to leave the team name for a future in which Oakland isn't a crime ridden dumpster fire that refuses to do anything about it being a crime ridden dumpster fire.

I think adding baseball to the strip will be great for the folks who are already vacationing there. Now they'll have 40 or so hockey games plus 81 baseball games plus 8 football games to serve as additional entertainment throughout the year. Folks are always looking for other things to on the strip when they aren't in casinos so it's simply another activity to add on to the itinerary.

But yeah I agree, I don't see a ton of people flying in because of baseball.

I'll probably go out tthere every other year when the Braves are playing there but that's just one data point.

Yep. This is 9 acres on the strip not some old industrial complex outside the city. Another casino/hotel there would print even more money.

This is a deal A's ownership wants and nobody else. They will make a killing on seat licenses and ticket sales to the casinos and hotels and not care at all about any fans being in the stadium

Also as someone else said, baseball stadiums aren't very multiuse. This is also 81 games of ingress/egress from a stadium on the strip opposed to 10 for the football stadium

They aren't trying to gentrify the strip.

That’s not the reason the A’s are leaving though.

But with the brutal heat there, there's no point building a partially retractable roof. It won't be open but for a couple of games a year anyway. They're better off just building a fixed roof if they are determined to build on that site.

Eh the night games could be open air as it does cool off in the desert

The Diamondbacks stadium is only open air for a few games early in the season. The rest of the year, it's closed. Las Vegas wouldn't be any different.

There's not much public sentiment for a new baseball stadium or team here. Part of the reason is that having a stadium in that location would be a huge cluster F, especially traffic wise. The F1 race and the Super Bowl have already caused enough problems there,

Goodman is term limited. A new Mayor will be elected in November. She's just trying to put her final footprint on things as she's headed out the door.

Fans here aren't really into baseball unless betting is involved. They'd much rather have an NBA team come here.

Somewhat related, the LV Ballpark is hosting its inaugural College Baseball Classic from March 1st-3rd. Oklahoma, Ohio State, Pitt and Cal will play a series of 6 games over 3 days. If this becomes an annual event, I'd love to see LSU get involved. The park is easily the best minor league park going and it's in a great location on the NW side of the valley.

From what I see on the local pages it is a mixed bag. It doesn't carry the hate that F1 did

Oakland is finished after this year. The owner of the minor league team in Sacramento is friends with Fisher.

quote:

The Oakland Athletics know where they’re playing in 2025 and it’s not in the Bay Area. Sources tell Sactown Sports’ Carmichael Dave that the A’s and Sacramento city officials are “finalizing an agreement to play temporarily” next season.

More details are expected to be announced by the end of this week.

If the Las Vegas residents have to fund a stadium then I'd say they will be against it.

Tax payers are calling these billionaires bluff on financing stadiums.

Oakland city council did the same with the A's & Raiders, but they weren't bluffing.

So should Oakland have caved to those franchises?
