Why can’t people enjoy a nice movie without analyzing the shite down to the last detail.

Yeah the movie doesn’t mention some other up and comers. But the point was true. They won 103 games on 1/3 of the payroll as the Yankees and Red Sox. That was the point. They address the issue y’all keep referring to at the end of the movie. The entire prologue part of the movie is him trying to decide if he’ll do it all over again because the owner won’t pay the money to the new stars. That’s why he considered Boston. They would do both. He ended up at Boston because of this. It’s not the focus I know. But dang. Enjoy a well made baseball story guys. Y’all’d whine that your Cuban was too flavorful and how that’s not realistic of a cigar.

Beane did not end up in Boston.

IIRC, the holdup was that the As wanted Youlklis as part of the compensation and Boston refused to budge.

Offense has gone down since the widespread use of analytics.

Clashing with Art Howe all the time?

I read that Art Howe was not very pleased about how his character was portrayed in the movie.

I think it’s funny that Billy Beane allowed them to use his name/likeness in the movie, and they cast Brad Pit to play him.

This is Paul Depodesta:

He didn’t want his name used, so they changed it to Peter Brandt and cast Jonah Hill to play him.

Of all the criticism of the movie in this thread, the treatment of Howe was the absolute worse. To a person (other than Beane) everyone in the A's organization has said it was an unfair characterization of Howe.

That said, to say Beane is a bad GM is ridiculous. What he did with that organization with that payroll and fanbase was amazing.

The book does a better job of focusing on the economics of the novelty of the system. It emphasizes more that Beane was at the forefront of a trend (use of analytics and saber metrics, in his case to try to mitigate the ill effects of being a cash strapped small market team) rather than implying that he had uncovered some awful truth about baseball scouting and used math to beat the casino (like the movie basically did).

Still, it’s a really awesome sports movie but an even better book

The rotation is what made that team and it wasn’t even mentioned in the movie

It’s not mentioned one time and it made the entire team

Lets ignore the fact that the As had one is the best pitching staffs in baseball.

Entertaining movie though.

I love the movie. It's baseball movie about numbers.

Let me say this, from a baseball perspective. It's a completely different sport than the others.

In a 9 inning baseball game, your 7-8-9 hitters may combine for 10 plate appearances. You would love for that to turn into 4 base runners.

You win games by scoring runs. Yes, you need strong pitching and defense, but at the end of the day, I would say, you gotta score more runs than the other team.

At every level, there is a magic number of runs you are trying to score. At the Major League level, I think that number is 5. If you score 5 runs every single game, you'd probably win 90 or so and get into the playoffs.

How do you score runs? By getting on base. Base runners score runs. If in a 9 inning game, I get more baserunners than you, i likely score more runs than you. So that's the formula.

For 100 years, MLB has over-valued the homerun, in my opinion. In a 162 game season, a lot of guys get 600 plate appearances. A guy hits 30 homeruns out of those 600 plate appearances and they'll pay him $20 mill a year. And he'll strikeout 150 times, or more.

Watched this movie for the first time last night. Not sure why it took me so damn long to watch it. Loved it. Don't really care about the inaccuracies or omissions. The acting was great, it was funny, and emotional. 10/10 for me.

Billy Beane IRL is a fricking terrible GM.

alright

He has definitely lost some of his shine considering how badly fleeced he has gotten in some recent trades. The Olson and Murphy trades stick out. None of the guys they got back in either of those deals are doing much for them. Even Langeliers is struggling pretty badly.

I had a short conversation with Grady Fuson at the A's 1983 Instructional League.

He basically asked me how the frick do I get people out with that fastball?

however the film conveniently leaves out the fact that the 2002 A's had one of the greatest rotations of all time, and had 3 studs in Tejada, Chavez, and Dye.

You think maybe Beane’s methods/philosophies for scouting, drafting and developing players may have helped them acquire those guys as well?

He isn’t their GM anymore and I think barely involved in personnel decisions at this point. Definitely more of a part owner/advisor.

what

Runs are down from the absolute insanity that was the steroid era of the mid to late 90s to the early to mid 2000s but are up compared to basically every other era
