How come Pete Sampras never achieved the popularity of the Big 3 or Andre Agassi?

286 weeks at number one in the world. That’s the third most of all time.
He won 14 majors including 7 Wimbledon titles.
Was he simply in the wrong era?
I feel like tennis in the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s with Agassi was very popular but somehow in the mid 90’s to late 2000’s it wasn’t as popular.

Pete was just super boring. The general public was probably more drawn to Agassi.

Agassi had a more meteoric rise and media push but he faded. Sampras was Tennis for a very long time. He was as big a star as I’ve ever seen in the sport.

As far as personality goes, and who has more, it's a toss-up between Pete Sampras, Scottie Scheffler, and a fresh corpse.

Everything about him is boring. The way he played and his off the court personality put people to sleep. This was widely discussed during his career - the British press in particular were ruthless about how dull he was.

I remember watching Wimbledon as a kid during the summer. The difference between British fans with Sampras and Agassi was stark. People yelling down, Agassi talking back, etc.
My nostalgia for those 90s tournaments is off the charts.

This is part of it, I think, as well.
Also, a lot of women like tennis. For most of them in the 80/90 a lot of women found this

Especially when coupled with their different personalities.
But within the professional tennis world, Sampras seemed to be highly respected.

I'm a very casual tennis watcher (wouldn't call myself a fan exactly) but I seem to remember that Agassi made his debut a couple of years before Sampras, and so he got the early press that continued through his career.
When Sampras hit the tour, so did Jim Courier, and Courier got some major press for his Aussie and French open performances, so with that and the continued fawning over Agassi, Sampras was this solid player but was kept in the shadows.
But he did marry Bridgette Wilson, so he's the big winner.

He was arguably considered the GOAT although he never won the French Open and his contemporary Agassi had the career grand slam.
Nice guy. Boring style. No scandals and didn't scream like Mac or Conners.
