A's and Bally's finalizing $1.5B new LV MLB stadium

The Oakland A’s and Bally’s Corp. have an agreement in place for the team to build a $1.5 billion stadium on a portion of the Tropicana Las Vegas site, a move expected to reduce the amount of public financing sought for the project to $395 million.
Sources with knowledge of the negotiations told The Nevada Independent on Tuesday that under the scope of the deal, Bally’s plans to demolish the Tropicana and allow the A’s to construct a 35,000-seat retractable roof stadium on 9 acres of the 34-acre site on Tropicana Avenue near the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip.

The Las Vegas Athletics?

A’s President Dave Kaval: “For a while we were on parallel paths (with Oakland), but we have turned our attention to Las Vegas to get a deal here for the A’s and find a long-term home.”
quote:
If all goes as planned and the A’s negotiate a public-private partnership that benefits all sides, and MLB approves their relocation, plans call for crews to break ground on the new Las Vegas ballpark sometime in 2024.
“Then opening for the 2027 season,” Kaval said. “That’s the current plan right now. Obviously things need to fall into place … but I think that is an achievable timeline right now.”
quote:
The site is just over a mile north of Allegiant Stadium on Dean Martin and is a little over a mile west of T-Mobile Arena, which is located just off Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard.
“It’s really in the sports district,” Kaval said. “So you have all the stadiums kind of clustered in one spot. I think that creates a powerful zone, a kind of energy to it that will benefit the community and also help us be successful running a baseball team.”
To further that synergy, there’s also a possibility that the A’s would have a pedestrian bridge constructed from their ballpark over I-15 linking to Park Avenue at T-Mobile Arena.
“So you’d have this connection to the Strip, which would be great for tourists getting in and out of the location,” Kaval said. “It’s also a nice way to knit everything together in a positive way and extend the vibrancy of the area. It also helps the casinos in that area as well as the resorts.”

Yes. Vegas A's. Plenty of nicknames.

Vegas is such a weird collection of transplants that it just might work. 70% of their ticket sales will be to transplant fans originally from a different city wanting to see their home team play

I was hoping a new stadium in Oakland would happen. What a clusterfrick of a government in Oakland. Good grief. So would they play in the minor league stadium (Cashman Field?) until the new park is ready?

Can the coliseum make it another 3 years?

Once Vegas gets an NBA team, which will be soon I think, they'll go from having 0 teams in the Big 4 NA sports leagues to having one in each in the span of a decade or so.

Well, we're overrun with folks from Cali who have bailed out and moved here, so we might as well start taking their teams.
The AAA Las Vegas Aviators now play in the Las Vegas Ballpark, pictured below. Cashman Field was abandoned a couple of years ago, leaving it to the USL's Las Vegas Lights FC and the XFL's Las Vegas Vipers.

Their lease agreement runs through 2025 I believe. If they break ground in Vegas ASAP they could be ready to go as soon as their contract with Oakland expires.

I wonder if these relocations are political at all or simply socioeconomic. You do have to think that a billionaire would fare better in Las Vegas than California these days.

Oakland is having a fire sale on professional sports teams with their shitty government.
Raiders/A's gone to Vegas
Warriors built a brand new $2B stadium in San Fran instead
City government called their bluffs on giving them what they wanted. They FAFO'ed 3 times in 5 years.

Maybe overall, but in this case, it's just because Oakland has fumbled the bag. The A's gave them every opportunity to keep the team and the city just couldn't come through. They should've relocated a long time ago.

Government shouldn't be propping up teams.

They shouldn't be propping them up, but they also shouldn't be fricking the teams over. Can't imagine the amount of money Oakland has cost itself by losing Raiders, Warriors and now the A's.

And look at the value of the Raiders now. From I think it was 27th in the NFL in 2016 to now 9th.
The A's from this move alone will significantly increase in franchise value. And I'm sure the stadium will be insane too with the money behind it.
A whole lot of Asian tourists would LOVE to take in an MLB game.

If they stay there until the Vegas stadium is ready, it can probably make it. I would assume foot traffic would be greatly reduced.
