Paid Bereavement Leave

Had an employee ask me who to talk to about filling out for bereavement leave today so they didn't lose pay. I have never heard of such a thing. So I look it up and sure enough, this is a actual thing. How many of you guys get paid bereavement leave, I'm generally curious. I would never deny time off for a funeral but paid leave? I feel like I have some guys that would start murdering relatives.

Its not that uncommon, but usually only a few days and limited to the death of an immediate family member (spouse, child, parents). Not for the death of a friend or 2nd cousin.

I got 5 days of paid bereavement a few months ago after my grandmother died. I guess our policy has changed. I think it used to be 3 days/year max.

If your business can't function for 3 days because someone is out when their mom died, that's not that person's fault.

Nah dude, read it again. I'm talking about paid leave. Of course I'm giving unpaid leave for a funeral, no problem, I don't have a problem with someone missing work for this or using their existing PTO without notice. (In this case, it was an uncle, so they wouldn't qualify for a lot of the responses in this thread)
Apparently it's pretty common though to give extra paid time off for this specific reason, and this I was not aware of; thanks for feedback fellas.

My company is 5 paid days per year.

My company actually just instituted this policy on Monday. It's 3-days paid bereavement and must be consecutive for close family members. Can be at the time of death or for the services.

As a company benefit I get up to 3 days paid bereavement leave for immediate family members. Paid leave. Do not need to use PTO.

I have never worked anywhere that didn't offer some sort of paid bereavement leave for immediate family members. Typical was 3 days.

I get it and have st my last few companies it's generally only for family members and our policy gives more time for immediate family than extended.

Every company that I’ve worked for has had some type of paid bereavement benefit. The company that I work for now is a mid-size company and they offer 3 days paid leave. The large conglomerate that I worked for in the mid-late 90s offered 5 days for mother, father, husband, wife and children and 3 days for grandparents and aunts & uncles.

Likewise - 6 different companies. Pretty universal.
If you can give sick leave, a few days for the death of an immediate family is common sense to offer.

Sounds like hourly workers you’re dealing with right? Full or part time?

We get 3 days for close family and 1 day for some other family members. The relationship and how many you get are defined in our policy manual.
