Because frankly you guys are not thinking through the "immediate family" part.

I don't understand what you're trying to say here.

quote:

I can't tell you the amount of times I've heard "she was my second cousin but we were like sisters" or "my sister passed away buy we weren't close so I'm not going".

Ok great. That doesn't fit the definition.

quote:

ut there's a good chance with 1 or 2 days off the funeral is on a Th-T and then you can get 4 days off in a row to mourn.

I've never been consulted on what day of the week is best for me for a funeral What a nonsense take.

Its not that uncommon, but usually only a few days and limited to the death of an immediate family member (spouse, child, parents). Not for the death of a friend or 2nd cousin.

I had an employee once, that wanted multiple days off for her great-grandmother's death. Maw Maw lived less than an hour away from her, and she said she needed the time because it was so far away. Employee was a 22 y/o single mother that lived with her parents.

1 or 2 days paid for a close family member I think is legit. 3-5 is absurd. If you need more then 1 or 2 as far as I'm concerned take as many of your PTO days off as you'd like, I'll support that.

You've clearly never had to deal with the death of a close family member. Even if it is an elderly parent that you know will be passing away sometime soon, there is still a lot of things to do. You have to schedule the funeral, you have to schedule the burial, you have to tie up any loose ends if they had any end of life care (hospital, in home care, etc). Amongst other things.

You continue to completely show your arse on this board. You are a lucky mother fricker that someone gave you a business because you are a complete and total dumbass

God forbid I want to take more than half a week off if my wife dies. Are some of you really in a position to be making decisions?

Typical of plants, refineries, etc. to offer up to 3 days time off with pay in the event of certain relatives passing away. Most I know of has to be for the funeral...you couldn't float the days to when ever you wanted to use them.
Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents, Mother-in-laws, Father-in-Laws, etc.

Yes. Depending on the person. Closest relatives were 3 days down to 4 hours for an aquaintance. Also depending on if your were a pall bearer.
Its was paid time off. No limits. But required approval. Didn’t count against regular sick time or vacation.

How many of you guys get paid bereavement leave, I'm generally curious

Wasn't aware any legitimate company didn't already offer this for basically immediate family or immediate in-law's. It's been a common benefit at any company I've worked for or interviewed.
