3 paid bereavement days when an immediate family member dies. Immediate family is defined as children, spouse, parents, grandparents. Must provide obit. Employer also always sends a nice arrangement.

Too much immediate family death the last 5 or so years for me

If a company was so stingy that they cannot lift their employees up a few days with pay if their parent, spouse, or child, hell even grandparent, aunt/uncle for a day or two, I probably wouldn't work for them. I say this as a person in charge of a business P&L. Your employees are your most valuable resources, give them structure, rules, and don't let them jerk you around, while at the same time treating them like a human being and 99 times out of 100 their value will far exceed their cost.

5 days for immediate family, 3 for next level, aunts/uncles/cousins.
This has been a policy at my company for at least 35 years.

You must’ve had some shitty arse jobs throughout your life for you to never have heard of this. I get three or four a year, I believe.

I also get 2 days of paid pawrental leave if I adopt a new pet . And 6 weeks of paid paternal leave if my birthing person partner has a baby that’s not for her boyfriend.

Small business, hourly blue collar world, employees are well compensated vs similar industry, but what can i say, this situation wasn't immediate family and employee didn't blink or care, but it just hasn't come up that many times in my career, and I didn't know it was normal practice, something to consider. I accept the downvotes for the ignorance.

We get 3 days for a death in the family. Also, if not in the immediate family there is personal time that can be used if needed. There is a good bit of flexibility depending on the situation.

My wife gets 5 days per event.

I use to get 3 days when I worked corporate.

I lost 3 relatives in a year and her work insisted she took the five full days off each time. Hers was 5 days consecutive, so if she missed 3 work days and 2 off days she got paid for the 3 days but if she was scheduled all 5 days she got paid for all 5 days.

Aunt, Uncle, grandparent have all been covered in my experience. Pretty dick move to not cover it IMO.

Nah dude, read it again. I'm talking about paid leave. Of course I'm giving unpaid leave for a funeral,

What kind of work environment are you building for your employees?

They’re being punished financially for wanting to grieve a dead parent?

Had an employee ask me who to talk to about filling out for bereavement leave today so they didn't lose pay. I have never heard of such a thing

How the hell do some of y'all get put in these positions? You are in a position to make decisions and don't understand or have never heard of paid bereavement? Is this your dad's or grandad's company and you got put in power b/c you are a relative? JFC

Can't really defend my op at this point, nor do I desire.

Am I a fool for never hearing of it? I guess so, blows my mind it has never come up if its this normal and expected. shite, I've taken time off in my career for a funeral and never thought to not just use pto. I'll make my exit now amongst the flames, ill take the L, and go on in life knowing paid bereavement leave is pretty standard apparently.

So I look it up and sure enough, this is a actual thing.

Why is this surprising? You'd have to be a cold heart'ed SOB to question paying someone a day or two to grieve an immediate family member.

ETA: Finished reading the thread, this employee can kick rocks looking to get paid for an acquaintance's passing

Because frankly you guys are not thinking through the "immediate family" part.

I can't tell you the amount of times I've heard "she was my second cousin but we were like sisters" or "my sister passed away buy we weren't close so I'm not going".

1 or 2 days paid for a close family member I think is legit. 3-5 is absurd. If you need more then 1 or 2 as far as I'm concerned take as many of your PTO days off as you'd like, I'll support that.

But there's a good chance with 1 or 2 days off the funeral is on a Th-T and then you can get 4 days off in a row to mourn.

You think 1-2 days is enough for a close family member? What do you mean by close? Wife, kids, parents, 1-2 days, really? I realize it all depends, parents 3-4 days should be enough. Wife and kids, there probably isn't enough time. I can see getting paid 3-5 days but personally I'd need more time off with wife or kids and I'd accept I won't be getting paid. An uncle, sure, 1-2 days.
