We put about 10-12k of expenses per month on a credit card and pay it off every month. I am Currently using a Discover cash back card.

Are there better options out there?

There's a long thread about this with lots of options

What rewards are you looking for and would like to use? Travel? Cash?

If your expenses are business related you have more options with business rewards cards

I like my Southwest Rapid Rewards card through Chase. I fly quite a bit throughout the year for meetings so I like the perk of extra points when booking through Southwest. Also like the idea of having enough points each year through total point accumulation to fly on a couple vacations per year with the kids.

We use an American Airlines MasterCard for the same reasons.

Hard to say, really depends on where you spend your money and if you’ll use the full benefits of said card to offset some of the annual fee. I personally use my Amex Gold the most. Used to use my sapphire preferred but I don’t much more because I flew United which is a direct transfer with chase, but they’ve pulled out of Monroe.

It’s odd to me how tied together credit cards and travel have been. I mean, for more than a few CC users, travel is only a very small part of our expenses. Just give me cash back.

Thanks for the input. I just checked my statement and last month I got $112 cash back which is about normal.

I will run some numbers tonight and see what I come up with. It will give me something to do while the wife watches some bs TV show.

When I was looking for the same thing a few years ago I made a spreadsheet with all the rewards percentages of the leading cash back cards at the time including annual fees, different categories, etc, and then pulled my full cc history for the rolling year and applied the cash back formulas to that spending to see what my net best option would be for my normal spending habits. I landed on the Wells Fargo propel amex. It narrowly beat out the capital one venture card at the time. I’ve been happy with the decision.

A lot of downvotes but no explanations as to why I’m off base. Please educate me.

I earn between 25-30,000 points during a typical month on either Marriott or Southwest, depending on which card I use. That equates to between $250-$300 in rooms or flights. If I used Discover to spend the same amount of money it would result in about $50-75 a month. If you travel a lot then the points for a hotel or flight are worth a lot more than a money back card in my experience.

If you like cash back and use often for dining/entertainment, I enjoy my Cap One Savor Card. I'm grandfathered in to 4% cash back on dining/entertainment with no annual fee. I think that option now has a fee, but there's a 3% on dining/entertainment option with no fee. Also has a 3% cash back on grocery, and 1% on everything else.

Travel cards are good too. Lots of good websites out there that compare cards which I have found helpful.

Cash back is money straight out of their pocket. Travel gives them two benefits: 1. Lots of people just never use the points and 2. It lets them also negotiate rates with travel companies, potentially skimming a bit off the top there as well.

For those of us that travel, it's the fricking tits, though

People are mentioning travel cards, but the OP didn’t say how much traveling (specifically flying) he did. I personally don’t fly often enough to make an airline card worthwhile. So I go with cards where I can switch the spending categories to whatever will be my biggest hit for a particular month. I’d say my BofA card gets the most use since I get a Platinum Honors bonus.

I do have an IHG card through Chase, as most tracks I go to have one of their brands close by. The annual free room night pays for the card. It’s nothing special, but I’ve had it for about 15 years, since I worked for another company that allowed me to book rooms for myself and others. I’ve probably accumulated 500k+ points over the years.

Because if you like to travel even just a little, there are way better values to be had than cash back cards.
It's not that difficult.

I use an AMEX Blue cash preferred for 6% cash back on groceries and 3% back on gas/uber etc. For everything else I use a Capital One Venture with gets 2x points on every purchase and best use of those points is erasing any travel purchases (flights /hotels/cars/Uber etc)

I enjoy my Cap One Savor Card.

I have Savor One. Get 4% back on dining, entertainment (concert and sports tickets) and streaming services; 3% on groceries; and 1% on other stuff. $95 a year fee.

They have other versions of Savor with no fee and slightly less cashback. Savor One Rewards with excellent credit is no fee and pays 3% on dining, etc.; 1% on other. (I may need to switch to this; have to run the numbers.)

They all pay 8% on tickets at Vivid Seats.

I try to use Cap One Quicksilver (1.5% on all) to buy the "other" categories on which Savor pays 1%.

I don't fly enough to mess with the mileage cards. Just give me cash.
