I’d definitely pick a 10 hour workday over an 8–especially if you have any sort of commute.

The demise of the paid lunch hour breaks my heart.

I could work through lunch and leave early if I wanted. We have a gym at work so I use that. Keeps me from taking an hour to get it done either in the morning or after I go home.

I hear ya. I wasn’t knocking your day. I just hate that your “ten hour work day” has zero minutes of paid break time, so taking an hour for lunch means your work day is actually eleven hours long, and that that has become the standard for eight hour workdays as well. Somehow, people didn’t really notice when “working a nine to five” turned into working 8-5.

Bing in manufacturing for many years, I have had the "perk" of 4 10's offered to me as an option several times. It's a complete lie and all bullshite from the jump.

For me it depends on traffic since I have to travel the width of Baton Rouge between home and work.

If I'm getting off at 3pm at the latest 5 days a week, that's going to be driving in at ~6am. Traffic at those times are far better for me than travelling the route at 7/8am-5/6pm. For me, having to face worse traffic twice a day for 4 days and none on only 1 day doesn't outbalance facing only a much lesser version twice a day all 5 days.

If traffic isn't an issue, I'll take the 4 10s.

Really depends on your life. I really prefer the 4 days on, but I (and many others) end up sleeping away much of that 1st day off.
Some wives/gf's aren't happy with that.
Depending on what days off it can cause problems scheduling stuff like doctors, or miss sleep to do so, if ur night shift.

Night shift sucks if you live in an apartment, duplex, condo, or very close houses, with noisy neighbors.

The idea of being able to dip out Thursday night and head to the camp for a 3 day weekend sounds appealing, but it wouldn't work right now with my family's schedule since I'm the one that drops the kids off every morning, and we're about 50/50 between my wife and I on after-school activities.

5 days and off at 2-3pm would work best, would be nice to have some free time in the afternoons to get the grass cut or do whatever before having to grab the kids around 5 and head off to activities.

Almost 14 years ago, I changed from a job that was an 8 hour a day for 40 hours a week to what is called a 9/80 schedule. Basically 9 hours a day except for the work Friday every other week which is only 8 hours. This gave me every other week with Friday off. Three day weekends on the regular is life changing. You will love 4-10's.

I’d be skeptical about a 5 day a week office job with expectations to leave early.

We’ve brought in old hands off shift that want to show up at 5:00am and cut out everyday after lunch. That doesn’t really work if we need you in meetings, collaboration activities, or just overall acceptance of in office culture.

Depends on your situation, but if you’re going to be working with people in an office setting on the 5 days gig, set expectations of working normal office ours.

I’m in my office m -f. But that’s because of the industry I’m in. But it’s very laid back. I come in early since that’s my nature. Most here show up after 9. But people also leave early, 2 or 3. I like it since it’s hour commute to home. I get home by 5 at the latest.
