He recruited Burrow (when noone else saw the potential) also Chase, Jefferson, Clyde, Marshall, Moss and a whole bunch of defensive players. He was open to changing the offense after 20 years of drudgery and bring in Joe Brady to work with Ensminger. He did a lot. Did he go off the rails, yep. But it doesn't take away from the greatest college football season ever. He loves LSU. Good enough for me.

Yeah, O's got baggage and it's not just BS posts on TD and it's not all 30 years ago either. Hell he was trying to pick up on the pregnant wife of an LSU administrator just 6 years ago when he was head coach!!

Coach O is LSU through and through. Maybe not an executive leader, but great recruiter and motivator. And great Tiger.

But to answer the OP's question, Ed will be under an elite executive leader who will get the most out of his assets and minimize the downsides. Watch the video of Coach O in the tunnel with recruits. Even Lane knows he can't match that.

I don’t mind Ed having a place on staff as long as he isn’t steering the ship any longer.

But for real he looks rough. Looks like he has a botched facelift

Totally agree, from what I can understand of his role it lines up with what he is good at. As long as he stays in that lane - if you will......I'm ok with the role he has now as far as my perception of that role.

Make NO mistake, the recruitment of Burrow was out of desperation. Not some clairvoyant recognition of All American talent that no one else saw. O, or more appropriately, his offensive staff, recognized after 2018 spring football that they had no one they felt confident in at QB. Etling was gone, and LSU was left with 2nd year Brennan (who struggled in the games he did play); true freshman Narcisse, and sophomore Justin McMillian. Burrow was the best of the minimal options available post-spring. It was a necessary gamble that allowed Ed to fall arse-backwards into greatness when Ensminger (who didn't really want to be the OC) wanted a young guy to hand a big part of the OC role.

He changed the offense in 2017 to satisfy a "campaign promise" that he did not deliver on, Kiffin to LSU as OC. About 3 games into the season he got sideways with Cananda immediatly after the season reverted back to the same outdated offense LSU ran prior to 2017. Brady changed everything...and that was largely at Ensminger's request.

He loves LSU.

He likes Louisiana. Otherwise, he loves whatever school he's coaching at. Just like most coaches. He would have "loved" another power conf. school too if they gave him a HC job after being fired from LSU. The problem is no other major conf. program was foolish enough to do so.

That said, O did have a great season as HC. Now, he's back in a specific role at which he excels, with minimal responsibilities, at a reasonable cost. That is certainly a benefit for LSU.

If you've ever met O, you cannot help but love his passion and enthusiasm.

As well as Boutte, Thomas, Nabers, and Nuss. All made NFL rosters and are all starters, except Nuss. Nuss is on the clock.

I think his passion and enthusiasm is genuine. He's a D line coach - that IMHO is his first and best destiny, that's in their DNA.

But passion is the true enemy of reason and fiery coonass D-line coaches tend to let it lead them astray. He was really IMHO not equipped to handle consistently and efficiently IMHO the issues many have listed here as reasons for the downfall. There's scenarios with each he could have handled differently and almost certainly better.

Dang TigerNation is hard on former LSU coaches. (hint: a couple of these coaches were deserving of the scorn) - but honestly, I don't understand the venom directed at those coaches who delivered a NC.

Myself, I liked Les Miles. I always enjoyed his creative english terms. My favorite - LSU is a "damn strong" football team. His achilles heel? He just simply could not defeat Nick Saban. But then very few coaches could.

I'd even be open to LSU inviting Coach Les Miles to preside over the opening season game coin toss. You know something along that line. Heck, let Coach Les Miles do one season opener and Coach Eaux do the next season opener. Hey, they delivered an NC.

Les Miles was a good coach. Plus he added a lot to the color commentary prior and during the game. After all - collegiate football is entertainment. At least it's supposed to be.

Coach O allegedly pulled up next to a woman wearing exercise attire at a gas station and said, “Hey, you look like you work out. We could work out together.” According to Miller, the woman informed Orgeron that she was married and pregnant. But the championship-winning head coach didn’t mind, asking “why does that matter?”

first off he did not know who she was or that she was married and preggo.

secondly you actually believe this was serious? what is highlighted above?

that is pure hearsay.

however, even if he did say that, O was known for quick jokes like that and might sound like some BS he would joke about.

it is a nothing burger.

I appreciate your loyalty to him, I really do - he is one of us - I consider myself a coonass to some extent, my Grandmother spoke French until she went to school.

I'm quite certain he did not know who she was, and whether or not it was a joke or not is to me totally irrelevant, it's pretty cringe and embarrassing for a sitting head coach at LSU - at least in my opinion. But you do you FB.

There's lots of other stuff that could be brought up on O if you want to do a deep dive discussion on this. I'd rather not but I could.

I see the resident O haters are falling over themselves in this thread. I would ask, do you support Lane Kiffin being hired as head coach here?

no, he's a scumbag with a long history of scumbag behavior

ETA: but that's very common in the coaching profession

So who exactly did you want as coach that would live up to your expectations of behavior?

It is such a myth that he put that championship team together. It was LUCK!! Nobody knew Joe Burrow was going to be that good. He wasn't the first year. It was the next summer when he worked with his receivers every day that he developed into the qb we know today. Likewise he inherited one of the best DC in the country and lucked into a guy from the Saints that nobody gave any credit to and was very young. Yeah, he made the final decisions but other people discovered them for them and it wasn't as though he had a lot of options.
