Remember… this all started over a video game.

The entire insanity of college sports has occurred because the NCAA would not let players get a few bucks from a basketball video game.
That ruling let everyone know that college sports does not have an antitrust exemption.
Every lawsuit now is based on “they can’t do x because x violates the Sherman Act”

Such a tired refrain. UCLA was making money before Ed OBannon, and has made much more since he left. The real problem here is everyone ether not understanding the difference between NIL and just employing players actually is, or purposefully playing ignorant.
I'll say it again, although the Ed Obannon case started it, the 2020/Covid/George Floyd/Deep State revolution that occured was an absolute retard's revolution in all areas of our society. We are dealing with the consequences of idiots getting their way because decent people didn't stand up to the idioctic mob.

Wow, you found a way to blame this on COVID, the deep state, and wokeness. I think you just left Biden out. Yes, if people had stood up to the mob, the Supreme Court would not have issued its ruling and the years of itiagaion would have just gone away.

i think we would have this issue either way.
NCAA rolling out the 5 to play 5 rule before the season began would have had all sorts of people suing.
Not really NIL related.

I was thinking this same thing the other day, I felt like this all started with EA sports. The student/athletes wanted to be compensated a little to use their name, image and likeness on a computer game, or autographs and the like. How did that evolve so quickly to million dollar contracts?

Athletes are "labor." The whole system was funded by free labor. The NCAA was acting as a cartel that limited the labor market for athletes.
The rumblings were already there. Players knew they were not receiving market compensation. Scholarships? Free room and board? That is not market compensation. The players knew.
The SCOTUS told everyone that the NCAA and its members cannot reduce their labor costs by calling the players "amateurs." And if you suggest that "if players don't like it, they can go somewhere else," you're going to run into something called anti-trust. Read the Alston decision.

It started because instead of creating fake players and fake numbers for real teams, they used real numbers of real players for the rosters.

The O'bannon case was the verdict that started the ball rolling. It is the failure of the NCAA and it's leadership to not get way out in front of this kind of thing. Major League Baseball got exemption from the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1922. With this legal precedent the NCAA could have easily gotten a similar exemption in the sixties and no one would have paid attention. Failure of bad leaders at the NCAA is mostly to blame.

Not just that, but if you changed the A&M quarterback to Manziel the announcer would pronounce it correctly.
If they made randomized names and numbers and appearances the crowdsourcers would have just needed to do a little more work and they would have been able to say that wasn't the real players in the factory settings.

5 for 5 cane about because of other issues like redshirts and JUCO
Does any of that happen if the lack of antitrust exemption isn’t a huge issue?
