Hell just do a charity scrimmage with Tulane or ULL. Sell tickets, night game, stream it.

Do that in lieu of your last team scrimmage

right but SFP's dreams of starting the year with 2 cupcakes are instantly dashed

It is a good thought though

Uhh Belichick doesn't pick his schedule...and they started against Philly this year

With a 12 team playoff next year you can certainly afford an opening game loss, SFP.

People keep saying this but I don't know if this is true.

Again, we still have 11 more games and an SEC schedule. Most teams we are competing against don't even have that to deal with.

A very likely scenario is a 10-2 LSU squad missing out on Atlanta but still in the hunt for a playoff spot, alongside ten or so other 10-2 teams, of whom two, maybe three are also SEC teams. At that point the question becomes "Who did you beat?". Again, a very likely scenario

Yea, we get two "breathers" next year (SC & UCLA) before surging into the brutal SEC schedule

We can still schedule quality OOC opponents...just not in week 1

It gets a lot harder to schedule quality opponents as the year goes on. Nobody is playing conference games week 1.

My personal opinion is that the system kind of begs you to either play cupcakes or play big time OOC games. Playing middle-of-the-pack power 5 teams puts you in a situation where you have a lot to lose but little to gain. So if I’m going to play an OOC power 5 game, I’d rather it be against a top 10 team than a borderline ranked team. Of course that can be hard to predict years in advance.

I also think we may be reading a little too far into the whole “not being ready to play week 1” thing. The program is still stabilizing and I think we will have more continuity once we aren’t filling so many gaping holes with transfers.

I honestly hope the SEC goes to 9 games + 2 required P5 games, rather than LSU going to more cupcakes. Either way I think it matters a lot less once we start the 12 team playoff.

Goal 1. Win the West. In order to do that will have plenty quality wins. Beat FSU and lose the West, you aren’t getting in this year. Too many quality teams across college football
Goal 2. Win the SEC
Accomplish 1&2, make playoffs. Don’t accomplish 1&2, win over FSU doesn’t get you in.
Point is doesn’t matter OOC win/loss if win conference so it’s more like NFL than it used to be

My thoughts exactly, unless we change our preparation for our first game. Two years in a row we've seemed unprepared for top competition. Last year it was easy to give Kelly and staff a pass. This year--not so much.

Either play @HI or play someone who plays @HI.

Or play HI in Tiger Stadium, or a special kickoff event, particularly out of the country (like Ireland). I would suggest LSU setup a new "The Annual Celebrating HBCUs CFB Kickoff Event" every year in Tiger Stadium in week 0. Play a different HBCU every year or maybe just alternate Grambling and Southern.

If his philosophy is to find yourself over the first few weeks, then a major priority moving forward has to be ensuring that we don't start the year against quality opponents. We can't keep punting early games because our coaching staff doesn't want to sell out and prepare our team for week 1 against the specific opponent.

First of all, well done.

Second, I remember a time when Miles and O were HCs and LSU would challenge their teams to compete within the first 2 opponents. Miami, Wisconsin, Washington, BYU, Texas, etc.

Now that Kelly is here, we need at least two pushovers so that part of the fan base can get a dopamine boost early in the season and believe that LSU has all the pieces to make a run for the NC, instead of waiting until the season takes shape.

That doesn't give you the extra regular season game. Presumably HI could go on the road for their extra game but I don't see why they would forgo an extra home game.

Since we are morphing into basically an NFL type framework, I’d prefer to just move to more uniform scheduling standards across the board. If it’s opening with a couple of FBS cupcakes (which I’m not a huge fan of in general theory, but I get the kind of preseason idea), then ensure that’s what everyone does. If you want to have a sort of big splash cross-conference matchup opening, then ensure THAT’S what everyone does.

This was supposed to be one of the purposes for having a committee. So they could look at the body of work of a team and make an objective decision.

I like the idea of big OOC matchups early in the season. To me, if I'm judging two teams with identical records and one of them won or loss a big OOC matchup and the other team only played cupcakes, I would reward the team that played OOC. Why? Because big OOC games are good for college football.

I’m sure the philosophy isn’t that. It has played out that way, but the staff expects to have the team ready by week 1.

And you are making the assumption that the tough game early doesn’t have positive impacts in getting the team ready.

And you are making the assumption that playing a tough team early would never have advantages.

If we didn’t play Florida state would anything that needed to change actually change?

I do not think so. I still think you see Perkins in the middle, chestnut on the outside, and OL stays the same. Until week 3 or 4 when we get the wake up call against a real team.

He needs to learn his team in fall camp. His evaluation of his own team have proven to be wrong 2 years in a row. Hence being forced to make lineup changes week 2 that are proven to be the right call.

Imagine if we started a season with the right lineup

bullshite excuse. If the other team can get ready to play, then LSU can too.

Maybe football isn't the right sport for you bed-wetters to watch.

I agree with the two cupcakes- besides, it's what the other teams are doing! I don't see Bama or Georgia scheduling any big games.

Les fricking Miles had little trouble taking on and beating quality opponents to start off the season.

Perhaps Brian Kelly can just do a better job of coaching to get the team ready to play.
correct. All this whining about wanting to play cupcakes is embarrassing. Coaches have all spring and fall camp to figure their teams out.

Norvell didn't seem to have any problem week 1 against us.

Besides, nobody likes cupcake games. I want them to entirely go away, and only play OOC games against other Power5 teams. Hopefully that's where we're headed, with the superconference realignment.
