I worked at UREC for four years, and was on the team when it was bid for and approved.

This money was voted on BY students. We voted to pay extra to update the UREC including the lazy river, overwhelmingly.

LSU was dead last in the SEC and near dead last in the US at sq.ft. per student and it now one of the premier campus recreation establishments in the country. I think the total project cost around $100 million with a majority coming from UREC savings over the years.

It’s laughable that spending hundreds of millions on specialty housing, dining, and facilities for athletes is reasonable, when they account for less than 5% of the student population (and 1/2 of 1% participate in revenue generating sports),

It is paid for by TAF and other private donations.

The REC was probably one of the worst facilities in the country for a "flagship university" The article is cherry picking with the lazy river and ignoring how bad the old facility used to be.

I didn't get a chance to respond in the other threads but will say that the overall UREC renovations are awesome, much better than when I attended in the late '90s. I'm guessing that the cost of the lazy river was a small fraction of the overall renovation but it's better clickbait to write an article that makes it sound like it was a huge expense.

frick 'em - new Rec facilities have been needed forever. Much better than the falling apart old Huey P. pool (though that was fun to sneak into for late night parties) or dilapidated weight room. How about some raquetball in the dungeon? You could pick your court based on the smell... ganja or piss. I used them and had fun in the 80s - as well as the "new" fieldhouse, but that new stuff in sweet.

When I was at LSU we all thought the rec was awesome. This was in the late 90s early 2000s.

So maybe students just became lil bitches.

Shouldn't Clemson be tied with LSU then since Clemson went and built the same thing and several other universities have them as well???

You have to wonder if it were just another student rec pool without the "LSU" - at the same price, would it even be news worthy.

It's not really a waste. I had a good friend who was an academic recruiter for LSU for years.

He was constantly working events with other SEC school recruiters, and what the admissions nuts at schools found is that year after year, the amenities and caliber of a school's rec center was always ranked in the top 5 of things considered by prospective students. He said a good rec center is always a huge sell.

Zero problem with it. The Rec has been a disaster for over a decade. Compared to other institutions, it’s been a laughing stock.

Didn't they rennovate it before? I could have sworn it got a makeover while I was in school. Which would have put that at less than a decade since they last upgraded the rec.

Don't know how much that was, but the pool/ lazy river at CajunRVera in New Iberia was 1 million.

In reality Students voted on it in 2011 to have one of the best facilities in America by an overwhelming 80% vote to levy a $150 student fee added to their bill.

33,000 in the student population and three flat benches in the whole place.

The REC center is unbelievable. I go there now and went there in college. It's completely transformed and probably the nicest gym I've ever seen. I can manage a workout even in peak times.

LSU's 'lazy river' is the ultimate example of out-of-control student fees for frivolous purposes at U.S. higher education instutions,

Didn't the students vote on a fee increase to build the thing? Hard to criticize the university, if so.

there may have been a couple of minor things but 90% of the facility hadn't been touched since probably the 80's. It was a terrible, Middleton level facility.

Speaking of which that thing needs to get knocked down 7 or 8 years ago

Yeah, I'd love for her to come to Baton Rouge and give that speech at Tiger Stadium.
