Zero problem with it. The Rec has been a disaster for over a decade. Compared to other institutions, it’s been a laughing stock.

The reasoning is it attracts students, thus over time paying for itself. That’s the justification in any facilities—better dorms, recreational facilities, dining halls, etc.
And it’s also true, at least to an extent. Is the lazy river cool? Hell yea, and I used it more than once my last month at LSU. Would it flip me to LSU over another school as an incoming freshman. Most likely no, but the UREC main facility upgrades sure as hell would.
Bottom line: most likely unnecessary, technically frivolous; though I get it, and it is pretty tight.

Well, USC is a private school so they can do whatever they want.
Seriously, I have been around a lot of college towns over the last few years and there are cranes operating at every major university. Its a building boom that is out of control while tuition costs continue to increase. Something has to give soon.

I mean if they are going to put a pool there anyways as part of the expansion, is it really any more expensive to shape it a different way?
LSU greatly needed to update the Rec. When I was in school, you had to constantly wait for equipment, and basketball could have a 30+ minute wait.
You better not have lost that first game
LSUs UREC was pathetic in 07-11. Students were already paying a REC fee, but many (like me) had a different gym membership. A good, larger, urec would have saved me money when with the fee increase for those 3 years.

How is it a waste of money? Because it’s a lazy river rather than a lap pool? Or just having a pool at all is a waste?
The “upgrades” in 2006 included 5 computers for email stations, four flat screen TVs, and some lounge chairs. Almost no one got to utilize them because the building was constantly under repair. Depending on what year you went there, the weight room would be in the basketball courts, racquetball courts, or somewhere inbetween.
LSU admins finally had the sense to say “frick it” and do a total overhaul in two main phases, rather than piecemeal it together over 40 years. It’s laughable that spending hundreds of millions on specialty housing, dining, and facilities for athletes is reasonable, when they account for less than 5% of the student population (and 1/2 of 1% participate in revenue generating sports), but investing in facilities to attract and serve the other 95-99.995% is seen as “wasteful”.
TL;DR
It irritates me that some snotty count, who has never stepped foot on LSU’s campus, decides to chastise them for building a faculty/feature that serves the student body and will attract potential students.
