I'm not saying Zipper was a great player. He may not be and never will be. But he also played for the worst coach in the SEC and one of the worst power conference coaches in the country. That has to be taken into context in any discussion. Every season McMahon would leave guys to waste away on the bench while his teams constantly got drummed. It would be one thing if McMahon had some great history of developing players at LSU to eventually become winners. But he didn't. At all! When you lose nearly 80% of your games against major conference opponents it is hard to give much credence to your personnel decisions. And it's hard to expect anyone would have great success under you when so very few (at LSU) have.
I'm not saying Santos is going to be some great player either. But Wade here gets the benefit of the doubt because he has earned it over the course of his career. McMahon doesn't get the benefit of the doubt...because he earned that over the course of his LSU career.
Not disagreeing with any of this at all, this guy is certainly a WAY better player than Zipper and not a doubt there (which is why I said that).
Just showing it's a tough adjustment and a 22 year old who played 22 minutes a game averaging 11 points on an Israeli team came here and couldnt even get on the court because of defense. Santos has played and seen american basketball already, so not worried about that, and Wade and staff certainly have way more of a clue than McMahon and his staff probably ever had, zero doubts there as well.
Wade knows what he's doing here and carefully trying to construct the roster. Simply based on what we're trying to get at the big spots, this guy just naturally slots in that 6-8 rotational player spot really well as a scorer (and not much else) off the bench. We get a guy like Graves on board, along with what we have and another splah at the big spot, pretty natural seeing this guy as that bench scorer in the rotation ultimately.

he point on Zipper was defensively he was so bad he couldnt even get minutes on the court here.
McMahon's teams average KenPom ranking on defense was 116. None of his teams were good defensive teams (of which Zipper was only on one). So I wouldn't exactly hold McMahon out as the standard for determining who could and could not play defense. Based upon the data and record, few, if anyone, could play defense under McMahon.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic, but do you have any basis to support the claim that the reason he didn't play is because he couldn't defend? Or his that just supposition? Because who the hell know what McMahon's reasoning was behind his personnel decisions...other than the fact they rarely produced success.

If you believe every rumor you see on how much we're paying all these players it will end up north of $25M probably
He was making $1.4-$1.5M on his contract per year, it's possible we decided to double that but I kind doubt we had to go that high.

In the very limited time Zipper was on the court, he was basically an automatic get blown by defender, and also just seemed to not know where to even be at (a lot of) times.
It might not even have been the lack of athleticism part on defense for him, it could have just been he had no clue what he was supposed to on defense as the game went along (and if you're not goign to put in the work to understand even where to be, year pretty easy decision to not even play you)....but it certainly seemed like he stopped playing because defensively he was completely useless. Almost to the point it was like we only had 4 players on the court when he was out there.

Great news.
If he shoots 40% from the three point line, why does he just average 6.9 points per game?
Not criticizing, just asking.

It makes sense that Wade is building the roster this way. The best players in the NBA are international players for the most part ( Jokic, Giannis, Luka, Shia- Gilgeous, Embid, Wemby, etc). The scouting landscape for basketball is literally worldwide. It was a matter of time before college basketball went fully after international players once NIL became possible.
This could really elevate the quality of play in college basketball overall.

Only playing 14 minutes a game.

a longtime college basketball fan I don't necessarily love what college basketball has become. But it is reality. So you either adapt or get left behind (a certain former coach constantly tired to build a program like it was 2018...the results spoke for themselves). If the college players are going to essentially be "pros" anyway, then why not see if you can get and have success with actual pros?

So it's just conjecture that he didn't play because of poor defense. He only ever played at the tail end of blowouts. I doubt anyone is doing a lot of hard defending then. Particularly on McMahon's team.
I'm not necessarily saying you are wrong. I can't know for certain the reason he didn't play much. None of us can unless we were on staff or the team. But saying he didn't play because of poor defense appears to be strictly based upon your opinion. All I'm saying is that ANY personnel decisions regarding players from last year...and the 3 years prior, have to be view through the prism they were being made by what all hard evidence shows was an inept coach.
For example, if Santos was signing with McMahon I'd be right there with you saying "who cares"? It will probably be another Zipper situation. Just like I said with the Australian pro who was previously committed to McMahon before he was fired. That's not because I had reason to believe the players were bad. It's because 4 years of information led to the more probable than not conclusion that none could have great success under McMahon.
A very important variable in the analysis has changed though. McMahon is no longer the coach. So I can't automatically say Santos won't be a big impact player, like Zipper wasn't, because he's not playing under the same set of circumstances. That's why it is not a one for one comparison.

He’s going to play
Wade said he is focusing his NIL on 7 or 8 guys. Santos is one of those, but he didn't get $3 million. He's a nice piece to have in the rotation but isn't starting on a roster with Graves, Dioubate, & Niang.

The fouling is an issue.
How does he do everything you expect if he isn’t on the floor, bunchie? His foul rate is not just high, it’s outrageous.
The guy obviously has some tangible offensive skills. Is a 24yr old professional going to suddenly learn the art to not fouling? The cohesive play in the euro league is definitely on another level, but the athletes in the SEC are better.
It is way more likely he finds a small niche vs playing extended rotational minutes.

Dont know why this is so hard to understand for some, if we get another really good big, you put Santos in the role he is meant to be in, offense off the bench. Why excerbate his worst attributes over 25-30 minutes if you dont have to
A big popping off the bench to give you 7-8 points in 15ish minutes would be awesome, and limits the downsides to his play.
I do think he will have to play a lot more potentially if Graves does indeed go to the NBA, but if Graves is here, just hard to see why he would play that much.

Patrick mcenroe has been discussing this, with a WSJ opinion piece and some Twitter arguments. he is concerned about NCAA tennis teams being all Serbians and french and nobody from baker or istrouma (he didn't use those exact examples)
the question is whether these universities have a responsibility to Americans first. do they? I don't know.
but if they are pro teams, they are pro teams. so be it. I guess.

To be fair it is presuming we land some more big guys here. If someone like Graves chooses NBA over us, things could change pretty quickly.
I am assuming we ultimately get Graves and perhaps Dessert as well although not sure if both of those are in the cards or not.
Being a freshman Darius Days/Emmitt Williams is not a bad thing when they had Kavell Bigby-Williams and Naz Reid in front of them. Neither of those 2 played 20+ minutes that year but gave us some really quality bench minutes. That's what I think Wade is envisioning for Santos as well. Not that Santos and them have the exact same game, but that Days and Williams gave us some great quality minutes off the bench that year.

its very weird. agent calls, says buy a backpack and a new laptop and some pencils. here is your psych textbook. be at Coates hall at 9:30 MWF. have fun at Fred's.

Best thing about Santos is that he can hit the 3 at that size.
His shot from 3 is super smooth. I bet he is going to kill on the catch and shoot. He did a lot of that for his prior team.
